Hochfilzen
Hochfilzen is a town and municipality in the Kitzbühel district of the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is located in the Pillersee valley 5 km east of Fieberbrunn. Population was 1,147 in 2016. It is a popular winter sports resort, especially for cross-country skiing. In 2017 (9 to 19 February) it hosted the Biathlon World Championships, as it also did in 2005, 1998 and 1978, and it is a regular venue in the annual IBU World Cup series. Training area In 1875 Hochfilzen was joined to the railway network and soon afterwards a military training area was established here. Biathlon World Championships 2017
The 49th Biathlon World Championships was held from 9 to 19 February 2017 in Hochfilzen, Austria. There were a total of 11 competitions: sprint, pursuit, individual, mass start, and relay races for men and women, and mixed relay. All the events during this championships also count for the Biathlon World Cup season. Host selection The second candidate city was Östersund, Sweden. Hochfilzen was selected as the host city on September 2 2012 during the X IBU Congress in Merano, Italy (27 to 20 votes). Biathlon World Championships
The first Biathlon World Championships (BWCH) was held in 1958, with individual and team contests for men. The number of events has grown significantly over the years. Beginning in 1984, women biathletes had their own World Championships, and finally, from 1989, both genders have been participating in joint Biathlon World Championships. In 1978 the development was enhanced by the change from the large army rifle calibre to a small bore rifle, while the range to the target was reduced from 150 to 50 meters. Venues The Biathlon World Championships of the season takes place during February or March. Some years it has been necessary to schedule parts of the Championships at other than the main venue because of weather and/or snow conditions. Wiesensee (Tirol)
Wiesensee () is a small lake in the northwest corner of the Hochfilzen municipality of Tyrol, Austria. Location It lies between Pillersee and Hochfilzen in Austria, near the village of . It gives its name to the ''Wiesenseetal'' (Wiesensee Valley). Hydrology Wiesensee is fed from the south and drained to the north by the Katzelbach stream. It is close to the source of the Katzelbach and from the valley watershed separating that stream from the Dunkelbach river, however both ultimately progress to the Inn river and then to the Danube. The 33rd Biathlon World Championships held in March 1998 in Pokljuka, Slovenia, and for the second time in Hochfilzen, Austria were only for the pursuit races (Pokljuka) and the team events (Hochfilzen) because these were not part of the Olympic programme in Nagano. The Bezirk Kitzbühel is an administrative district (''Bezirk'') in Tyrol, Austria. Lucona
''Lucona'' was a ship sunk in the Indian Ocean on 23 January 1977 by a bomb planted by Austrian businessman Udo Proksch, as part of an insurance fraud. Proksch, the owner of the cargo, also then-owner of famous Viennese confectioners Demel, claimed 212 million schilling (approx. US$20 million) from his insurance company, saying that the cargo was expensive uranium mining equipment. He was subsequently convicted in 1991 of the murder of six crew (of the crew of 12) who were killed by the explosion, and died in prison. The ''Lucona'' was located by American shipwreck hunter David Mearns in January 1991; this was his first discovered very deep water wreck, at 4,200 metres (13,799 feet).
