2016–17 Indian Women's League Season
The 2016–17 Indian Women's League season was the first season of the Indian Women's League, a women's football league in India. The season was scheduled to kick off with the preliminary rounds on 17 October 2016 in which the top two teams from the two groups qualified for the league proper. In the final round four teams from qualifier joined by two direct entry teams. Eastern Sporting Union won the title in the inaugural season. Preliminary round Teams Eastern Sporting Union and Rising Student Club entered final rounds by topping their groups, and Alakhpura and Jeppiaar Institute as group runners-up. Final round The final round will be held from January 28 to February 14 at the Ambedkar Stadium. The league proper will follow a round robin format with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. Indian Women's League
The Indian Women's League, known as ''Hero Indian Women's League'' for sponsorship ties with Hero MotoCorp is the women's top tier professional football league in Indian football. Founded in 2016, currently a total of 18 teams from across the country will participate in the league from 2022-23 Season. The competition was planned since 2014 and got established in 2016, with the first season starting from October 2016 in Cuttack. The league was launched as India's first professional football league for women with the aim to increase the player pool for India national team. Since 2019–20, the clubs that become champions are granted an opportunity to play in the AFC Women's Club Championship, the top tier women's club football competition in Asia. Yumnam Kamala Devi (born 4 March 1992) is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder and an occasional striker for the Indian team. She currently plays for Eastern Sporting Union in the Indian Women's League. Jabamani Tudu (born 10 April 2000) is an Indian women's international footballer who plays as a defender for East Coast Railway and the India women's national football team. Career Born in Odisha, Tudu was a part of the Odisha Sports Hostel. She has played in youth and senior football tournaments. Football Club Pune City Women was an Indian women's football club based in Pune, Maharashtra, which last played in Indian Women's League, the top flight of Indian women's football. The club was established 2017, prior to the league's inaugural season. History In April 2016 it was announced by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) president, Praful Patel, that an Indian women's football league would begin in October 2016. Then, in July 2016, the AIFF hosted a workshop program for the proposed women's league at which Pune City, an Indian Super League side, were present. 2016–17 Indian Women's League Final Round
The 2016–17 Indian Women's League final round was played between six teams to decide the champion of Indian Women's League inaugural season. It was held from 28 January to 14 February at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. The league proper followed a round-robin format with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. Eastern Sporting Union and Rising Students entered round by topping their groups in the preliminary round. Alakhpura and Jeppiaar Institute entered after finishing second in their respective groups. Pune City and Aizawl joined them as direct entry teams. Eastern Sporting Union won the final beating Rising Students 3–0. Dr. Ambedkar Stadium is a football stadium in New Delhi, India. The stadium is named in honour of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, famous social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution. It was earlier known as the Corporation Stadium. It also held competitions like Delhi Football League, DCM Trophy, Subroto Cup and Durand Cup.
