Jamaica
Jamaica (; ) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Spanning in area, it is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean (after Cuba and Hispaniola). Yvette Francis-McBarnette
Yvette Francis-McBarnette (May 10, 1926 – March 28, 2016) was an American pediatrician and a pioneer in treating children with sickle cell anaemia. Early life and education Francis-McBarnette was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 10 May 1926 to schoolteachers Clarence and Sarah Francis. The family moved to New York City when she was a toddler. She graduated from Hunter College High School at the age of 14, then she enrolled at Hunter College and completed a bachelor's degree in chemistry, followed by a master's degree in chemistry at Columbia University. In 1946, aged 19, she enrolled at the Yale School of Medicine - she was the second black woman at the school. Francis-McBarnette completed her paediatrics residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. She returned to school in 1978, to complete a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. Mercedes Tharam Richards ( Kingston, 14 May 1955 – Hershey, 3 February 2016), née Davis, was a Jamaican astronomy and astrophysics professor. Her investigation focused on computational astrophysics, stellar astrophysics and exoplanets and brown dwarfs, and the physical dynamics of interacting binary stars systems. However, her pioneering research in the tomography of interacting binary star systems and cataclysmic variable stars to predict magnetic activity and simulate gas flow is her most known work. In 1977, she graduated with the degree of BSc in Physics from the University of the West Indies. Basil Barrington Watson (9 January 1931 – 26 January 2016) was a Jamaican painter. Biography Born in 1931 January 9th in Lucea, Barrington Watson made his original mark in Jamaica as a football player for Kingston College. Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics were held during the last 10 days of the games, from 12 to 21 August 2016, at the Olympic Stadium. The sport of athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics was made into three distinct sets of events: track and field events, road running events, and racewalking events. Competition schedule Track and field events were held at João Havelange Olympic Stadium, while the race walks and marathon start and finish in Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Sambódromo, respectively. Apart from the race walks and marathon, ten track and field events held finals in the morning session for the first time since 1988.
