In 2016, the foremost athletics events will be staged at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The two other major global level competitions in 2016 are the World Indoor Championships and World Half Marathon Championships. A new addition to the continental tournament schedule came in the form of the 2016 European Athletics Youth Championships. Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics were held during the last 10 days of the games, from 12 to 21 August 2016, at the Olympic Stadium. The sport of athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics was made into three distinct sets of events: track and field events, road running events, and racewalking events. Competition schedule Track and field events were held at João Havelange Olympic Stadium, while the race walks and marathon start and finish in Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Sambódromo, respectively. Asian Race Walking Championships
The Asian Race Walking Championships is an annual race walking competition for athletes representing countries from Asia, organized by the Asian Athletics Association (AAA). It was established in 2006 and has featured races for senior men (20 km and 50 km) and women (20 km). After the inaugural event 2006 in Wajima, Japan, the competition was split into two events: the 20 km (both men and women) were incorporated into the All-Japan Race Walking competitions held in mid March in Nomi, Japan. The 2016 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships was the seventh edition of the international indoor athletics event between Asian nations. It took place at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar, between 19 and 21 February. 2016 Arab Junior Athletics Championships
The 2016 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the seventeenth edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place between 5–8 May at the Lalla-Setti Athletics Stadium in Tlemcen, Algeria. It was the first time that Algeria hosted the event. A total of 44 athletics events were contested, 22 for men and 22 for women. Around 800 athletes from 20 countries were expected to appear at the competition, though only 232 athletes from 15 nations ultimately did so. 2016 African Cross Country Championships
The 2016 African Cross Country Championships was the fourth edition of the international cross country running competition for African athletes organised by the Confederation of African Athletics. It was held on 12 March at the Yaounde Golf Club in Yaoundé, Cameroon – the first time a West African nation had hosted the event since its re-launch in 2011. There were four races on the program: 10 km for senior men, 8 km for senior women, 7 km for junior men and 5.5 km for junior women.
