South Korean President
The president of the Republic of Korea (), also known as the president of South Korea (often abbreviated to POTROK or POSK; ), is the head of state and head of government of the Republic of Korea. The president leads the State Council, and is the chief of the executive branch of the national government as well as the commander-in-chief of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. The Constitution and the amended Presidential Election Act of 1987 provide for election of the president by direct, secret ballot, ending sixteen years of indirect presidential elections under the preceding two authoritarian governments. The president is directly elected to a five-year term, with no possibility of re-election. If a presidential vacancy should occur, a successor must be elected within sixty days, during which time presidential duties are to be performed by the prime minister or other senior cabinet members in the order of priority as determined by law. Sinking Of MV Sewol
The ferry MV ''Sewol'' sank on the morning of April 16, 2014, en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (23:58 UTC, April 15, 2014). Out of 476 passengers and crew, 306 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School ( Ansan City). Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG). The sinking of ''Sewol'' resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many people criticized the actions of the ferry's captain and most of the crew. Busan (), officially known as is South Korea's most populous city after Seoul, with a population of over 3.4 million inhabitants. Formerly romanized as Pusan, it is the economic, cultural and educational center of southeastern South Korea, with its port being Korea's busiest and the sixth-busiest in the world. The Busan Metro () is the urban rail system operated by the Busan Transportation Corporation of Busan, South Korea. The metro network first opened in 1985 with seventeen stations. The Metro itself consists of 4 numbered lines, covering of route and serving 114 stations. 2014 Seoul Subway Crash
The 2014 Seoul subway crash, or the Sangwangsimni station rear-end accident ( ko, 상왕십리역 추돌 사고; Hanja: ), occurred on May 2, 2014 KST, when two subway cars collided in Seoul, South Korea. The district prosecutors later determined 388 people were injured (24 severely injured), while initially media reported 238 injuries. The two trainsets that were involved in the accident have since been withdrawn from service.
