2011 European Rowing Championships
The 2011 European Rowing Championships were the fifth edition of the European Rowing Championships, since they were reinstated by decision of FISA in 2006. The event was held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, between 16 and 18 September 2011. A total of 389 rowers (254 men and 135 women), representing 28 national federations, took part in 14 events – eight events less than those contested in the previous edition. Plovdiv
Plovdiv ( bg, Пловдив, ), is the second-largest city in Bulgaria, standing on the banks of the Maritsa river in the historical region of Thrace. It has a population of 346,893 and 675,000 in the greater metropolitan area. Plovdiv is the cultural capital of Bulgaria and was the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Stergios Papachristos ( el, Στέργιος Παπαχρήστος, born 26 January 1989 in Volos) is a Greek rower. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men's four. He was part of the Greek four that won the 2011 European Championship with Ioannis Tsilis, Georgios Tziallas and Ioannis Christou. This was the same team that won the silver medal at the 2011 World Championships. He was also part of the Greek men's four that won the silver at the 2010 World Championships, with Tsilis, Nikolaos Gkountoulas and Apostolos Gkountoulas. Francesco Fossi
Francesco Fossi (born 15 April 1988) is an Italian rower. He competed in the Men's quadruple sculls event at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the men's double sculls at the 2016 Summer Olympics. In the latter event, he finished fourth with teammate Romano Battisti. He has also won a silver medal in the men's double sculls, again with Battisti, at the 2014 World Rowing Championships. The previous year, the pair had won a bronze in the same event. Mario Paonessa
Mario Paonessa (born 9 December 1990) is an Italian rower. A two-time World Championship medallist, he competed in the men's four at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and the men's eight event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Career Paonessa began rowing at the age of nine, encouraged by his father who was also a rower. In 2008, he was part of the Italian junior quadruple sculls team that won silver at the World Championships. He was then part of the Italian under-23 men's four that won the U23 World title in 2010. A year later, his team won silver in the same event. His first senior medal was a bronze medal at the 2011 European Championships in the men's four.
