2009 Turkish Local Elections
Local elections were held in Turkey on 29 March 2009. The overall winner was the ruling party Justice and Development Party (Turkey), Justice and Development Party, although the party saw a decline in its vote relative to the 2007 Turkish general election, 2007 general election. The leading opposition party, the social democratic Kemalist Republican People's Party, CHP, increased its vote share, as did a number of smaller parties including the Felicity Party, SP, Democratic Society Party, DTP and Great Union Party, BBP, whose party leader Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu had died in a 2009 Medair TC-HEK helicopter crash, helicopter crash four days before the election. The third largest party, the Turkish nationalist Nationalist Movement Party, MHP, enjoyed a more modest vote surge. The election was not contested by Cem Uzan's Young Party, GP. Cem Uzan (born 26 December 1960, İstanbul) is a Turkish businessman and politician involved in the media and banking industries, while also chairing the social liberal Young Party (GP). His family's media empire (Uzan Group) at one time included both television stations and print media. His family was one of Turkey's most influential families. Workers' Party (Turkey)
The Workers' Party ( tr, ) was a political party founded in 1992 and led by Doğu Perinçek. The Motherland Party ( tr, Anavatan Partisi, abbreviated as ANAVATAN, formerly ANAP) is a political party in Turkey. It was founded in 1983 by Turgut Özal. It merged with the Democratic Party in October 2009, but in the September of 2011 the party was re-established again. Its current president is İbrahim Çelebi.
