2004 Census In Transnistria
The 2004 Transnistrian census was organized in Transnistria at roughly the same time that Moldova held its own census, which Transnistria refused to participate in out of principle and deference to its September 2, 1990 declaration of independence. Transnistria
Transnistria, officially the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), is an unrecognised breakaway state that is internationally recognised as a part of Moldova. Transnistria controls most of the narrow strip of land between the Dniester river and the Moldovan–Ukrainian border, as well as some land on the other side of the river's bank. Its capital and largest city is Tiraspol. Transnistria has been recognised only by three other unrecognised or partially recognised breakaway states: Abkhazia, Artsakh and South Ossetia. 2004 Moldovan Census
The 2004 Moldovan census was carried out between October 5 and October 12, 2004. The breakaway Transnistria failed to come into an agreement with the central government in Chişinău, and carried out its own census between November 11 and November 18, 2004. The results of the census in Transnistria were put into question. Moldova's previous census was performed in 1989, when the territory of the country was part of the former Soviet Union. Demographic History Of Transnistria
A demographic history of Transnistria shows that Transnistria has been home to numerous ethnic groups, in varying proportions, over time. Ethnicity prior to 1792 The word "Transnistria" means literally "lands beyond the Dniester" (called the Nistru in the Romanian language). These lands are historically related to the neo-Latin populations that lived east of the Dniester River. In the coastal area of these lands, during the Roman Empire, there were small cities of nearly 5,000 inhabitants such as Tyras and Olbia. Roman colonists settled in these areas under the protection of Roman legionaries. The interior of Transnistria was sparsely populated by eastern European tribal groups. 2015 Transnistrian Census
The 2015 Transnistrian census was organized in the unrecognized state of Transnistria in 2015. It was held after Moldova, internationally recognized as the owner of the state's territory, made a census in 2014. Census results According to the census results, Transnistria's population was of 475,373 people in 2015. This represented a population decline of 14.47% (or nearly 80,000 people) since the 2004 Transnistrian census, which is an amount similar to the population of the second largest Transnistrian-controlled city, Bender (Tighina). The ethnic composition results were the following: * Russians: 29.1% * Moldovans: 28.6% * Ukrainians: 22.9% * Bulgarians: 2.4% * Gagauz: 1.1% * Belarusians: 0.5% * Transnistrians: 0.2% * Others: 1.4% This census was the first one in Transnistria in which the population was given the option to identify as "Transnistrian", which more than 1,000 people did. 1989 Transnistrian Census
The 1989 Transnistrian census was organized by the authorities of the MSSR in the final days of its existence as a Soviet republic. It took place as part of the Soviet Census of 1989. Results from the 1989 census showed that among the population of Transnistria, approximately 40% were ethnic Moldovans, 28% Ukrainians and 25% Russians.
