2004 Australia Day Honours
The 2004 Australia Day Honours are appointments to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by Australian citizens. The list was announced on 26 January 2004 by the Governor General of Australia, Michael Jeffrey. Australian Honours System
The Australian honours and awards system refers to all Order (distinction), orders, decorations, and medals, as instituted by letters patent from the Monarchy of Australia, Monarch of Australia and countersigned by the Australian prime minister at the time, that have been progressively introduced since 14 February 1975. The Australian honours and awards system excludes all state and local government, and private, issued awards and medals (although a few can be recognised in the Australian Honours Order of Wearing, order of wearing, like those in the Order of Saint John (chartered 1888), Order of St John). Honours and awards have been present in Australia since pre-Federation of Australia, Federation, primarily from the Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom, Imperial honours and awards system. Victor Warren Fazio
Victor Warren Fazio AO, (2 February 1940 – 6 July 2015), an Australian, was a colorectal surgeon, a leader at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio for over 35 years. He pioneered surgical techniques and improved the quality of life for cancer patients around the world. He wrote or co-authored 13 books, contributed scientific papers to standard texts, lectured and taught younger surgeons in the United States and Australia. Robert Williamson (physician)
Robert Williamson (born 1938) is a retired British-Australian molecular biologist who specialised in the mapping, gene identification, and diagnosis of human genetic disorders. Career Williamson was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Scottish parents. He was educated at the Bronx High School of Science in New York and then Wandsworth School in South London after his parents returned to the UK, before studying at University College London. From 1963 he was lecturer, then senior lecturer, in developmental biology at the University of Glasgow. From 1976 he was Professor and head of Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, University of London. Ian Temby
Ian Douglas Temby (born 5 May 1942) is an Australian barrister. He was the first Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and the first Commissioner of the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption. He conducted the Royal Commission into the Finance Broking Industry in Western Australia in 2001. Early life and education Temby was educated at the Perth Modern School and the University of Western Australia, where he earned an LL.B. (Hons.), graduating in 1964. Career Temby was admitted to legal practice on 23 December 1966 and joined the Perth law firm Northmore Hale Davey and Leake in the same year. Ann Caroline Sherry
Ann Caroline Sherry (born 1954) is an Australian public servant and businesswoman. Early life Ann Caroline Sherry was born on 2 February 1954 in Gympie, Queensland, Australia to parents, John Morgan Sherry and June Caroline (née Stanton), who were both pharmacists. She had an uneventful childhood in Gympie until her parents moved to a new pharmacy in Brisbane where she attended high school at Somerville House. Margot Prior
Margot Ruth Prior (24 March 1937 – 24 August 2020) was an Australian psychologist, educator, and musician. She was professor of psychology at the University of Melbourne where her research focussed on autism and literacy development. She was also director of psychology at the Royal Children's Hospital and was adjunct professor at La Trobe University. Biography Prior was born on 24 March 1937, in Melbourne, Victoria. Andrew Stuart Podger, (born 6 November 1948) is a retired Australian senior public servant. He is currently Professor of Public Policy at the Australian National University. Early life Podger was born 6 November 1948. Public service career Podger began his Commonwealth Public Service career in 1968 as a Cadet at the Australian Bureau of Statistics. After his time as a statistician he moved to the Social Welfare Commission in 1974 and then to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1975. Bardayal "Lofty" Nadjamerrek (–2009) was a Kunwinjku Aboriginal artist of the Mok clan. He belonged to the Duwa moiety and spoke the Kundedjnjenghmi language. He is currently referred to by his skin and clan as "Wamud Namok", following the Kunwinjku custom of avoiding use of the name of deceased persons. Nadjamerrek was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2004 Australia Day Honours for "service to the preservation of Indigenous culture as a Senior Traditional man and significant artist whose work documents the relationship of the land and its ancestral past via the Mimih Spirits of rock art". John Moore (Australian Politician)
John Colinton Moore (born 16 November 1936) is a former Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the House of Representatives for over 25 years, serving between 1975 and 2001, and was a minister in the Fraser and Howard governments. Background and early career Moore was born in Rockhampton, Queensland. He was raised on a cattle station west of Bowen. His early education was through the Australian correspondence system used for isolated families. Harold Charles Mitchell (born 13 May 1942) is an Australian entrepreneur, media buyer, philanthropist and humanitarian. Life Harold Mitchell was born in Trafalgar, Victoria, one of four children. Donald McGauchie
Donald Gordon McGauchie (born ) is an Australian farmer and businessman. He was educated at Geelong Grammar School. He has a farming background, and is a senior partner of C & E McGauchie, Terrick West Estate, a poll merino stud in the Loddon Valley area of northern Victoria. From 1994 to 1998 was president of the National Farmers Federation. McGauchie had strong links to the Liberal Party and then prime minister John Howard. During Howard's term of office, McGauchie accepted several advisory positions with the government, serving on the Prime Minister's Supermarket to Asia Council, the Foreign Affairs Council and the Trade Policy Advisory Council. Ruth Stephanie McColl (born 1950) is a judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the highest court in the State of New South Wales, Australia, which forms part of the Australian court hierarchy.
