2001 Palanca Awards
The 51st Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was held on September 1, 2001, at The Peninsula Manila in Makati to commemorate the memory of Don Carlos Palanca Sr. through an endeavor that would promote education and culture in the country. Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, S.J. was Guest of Honor and Speaker at this year's awarding ceremony. Leoncio P. Deriada and Alfred A. Yuson were this year's Palanca Hall of Fame awardees. Deriada clinched his fifth first prize for “Maragtas: How Kapinangan Tricked Sumakwel Thrice” under the Full-Length Play category. And Yuson clinched his fifth first prize for “Pillage and Other Poems” under the Poetry category. Palanca Awards
The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, popularly known as the Palanca Awards, are a set of literary awards for Philippine writers. Usually referred to as the "Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines", it is the country's highest literary honor in terms of prestige. Winning works are entered in the competition either as previously published pieces or in manuscript form. The Palanca Awards, organized by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, is one of the Philippines' longest-running awards programs. It was named after Carlos Palanca Sr. History Palanca Awards was established in 1950 to inspire and recognize Philippine writers, including poets, playwrights and screenwriters, and writers for children. In the 1960s, the Palanca Awards Committee started to fund the publication of Palanca Award-winning plays, and production funds were committed in 1975. The Peninsula Manila
The Peninsula Manila (colloquially Manila Pen or simply Manila Peninsula), is a 5-star luxury hotel in the Philippines. 2000 Palanca Awards
The 50th Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was held on September 1, 2000, at The Peninsula Manila in Makati to commemorate the memory of Don Carlos Palanca Sr. through an endeavor that would promote education and culture in the country. This year saw the inclusion of a new a new category, Future Fiction, open for short stories that deal with the future of the Philippines or the future of Philippine writing, in English and Filipino. Roberto T. Añonuevo, Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., and Edgardo B. Maranan were this year's Palanca Hall of Fame awardees. Añonuevo clinched his fifth first prize for “Ang Resureksiyon” under the Sanaysay category. Dalisay clinched his fifth first prize for “The Woman in the Box” under the Short Story category. And Maranan clinched his fifth first prize for “Tabon and Other Poems” under the Poetry category. Luis Gatmaitan
Luis P. Gatmaitán, M.D., is a Filipino medical doctor and children's author. He appears on a radio program, ''Doctors On Line'', on Monday mornings at DZAS as a medical consultant. Gatmaitán was inducted into the Palanca Hall of Fame in 2005 for his writing. Most of his work is in the genre of children's literature, for which he has garnered many awards, including the Catholic Mass Media Awards. His books include ''Mga Kwento ni Tito Dok'' and ''Sandosenang Sapatos''. His medical career has been cited as one of ''HealthToday Philippines Magazine'' 's Ten Pillars of the Philippine Health Care Industry. Leoncio Deriada
Leoncio P. Deriada is a Filipino writer and professor emeritus of creative writing and literature at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas in Iloilo. He was born on January 13, 1938, in the town of Barotac Viejo, in the province of Iloilo in central Philippines but spent most of his life in Davao City in the island of Mindanao. He went to school at the Davao City High School and graduated in 1955. He earned his BA English degree at the Ateneo de Davao University where he graduated cum laude in 1959.
