1998 Belarusian Premier League
The 1998 Belarusian Premier League was the eighth season of top-tier football in Belarus. It started on April 12 and ended on October 31, 1998. Dinamo Minsk were the defending champions. Team changes from 1997 season Two worst teams of the last season ( Torpedo-Kadino Mogilev and Shakhtyor Soligorsk) relegated to the First League. They were replaced by two best clubs of 1996 First League (FC Gomel and BATE Borisov). In the early days of January it was announced that Transmash Mogilev ceased to exist as an independent club merged with Dnepr Mogilev (with the latter being renamed to Dnepr-Transmash Mogilev). Ataka Minsk, who suffered heavy financial troubles, let go all their senior team players and failed to confirm their participation in the new season by a deadline in early March. Belarusian Premier League
The Belarusian Premier League or the Vyšejšaja Liha or the Vysheyshaya Liga ( be, Вышэйшая ліга, russian: Высшая лига, "Top League") is the top division of professional football in Belarus, and is organized by the Belarusian Football Federation. The number of teams in the competition has varied over the years from as high as 17 (1992–93 season) to as low as 11 (2012). As of 2016, the league included 16 teams. Each team plays every other team twice during the course of the season. At the end of the season, the two teams with the fewest points are automatically relegated to the Belarusian First League, while the third worst team plays a promotion-relegation playoff against the third best team from the second tier. The top two teams from the Belarusian First League automatically win promotion to the Premier League. 1997 Belarusian Premier League
The 1997 Belarusian Premier League was the seventh season of top-tier football in Belarus. It started on April 11 and ended on November 11, 1997. MPKC Mozyr were the defending champions. Team changes from 1996 season Obuvshchik Lida and Vedrich Rechytsa, placed 15th and 16th respectively, relegated to the First League. They were replaced by two newcomers: 1996 First League winners Transmash Mogilev and runners-up Kommunalnik Slonim. Ataka-Aura Minsk shortened their name to Ataka Minsk Overview Dinamo Minsk won their 6th champions title and qualified for the next season's Champions League. FC Neman Grodno
FC Neman Grodno ( be, ФК Нёман Гродна, ''FK Nyoman Hrodna''; russian: ФК Неман Гродно) is a Belarusian football club from the city of Grodno, named after the Neman River and was founded in 1964. Since 1992, the team has participated in the top league of Belarus. History Since 1964, the team was playing in the third tier of the Soviet football system almost constantly, excluding two seasons (1968 and 1969) spent in the second tier. Since 1992, Neman plays in the Belarusian Premier League. In 1993, they won the Belarusian Cup. Belarusian First League
The Belarusian First League is the second tier of professional football in Belarus. It was created in 1992, following the Belarusian independence. History and format The typical format of the league involves 16 clubs playing a double round-robin tournament over 30 matchdays (with the exception of shortened 1992 and 1995 seasons, which were a single round-robin tournaments). On several occasions the number of participating teams was smaller (15 or 14), due to last minute withdrawals and no teams available for replacement. FC Slavia Mozyr
FC Slavia Mozyr ( be, ФК Славія Мазыр, ''FK Slavija Mazyr'') is a Belarusian football team, based in Mozyr, Belarus. History The team was founded in 1987 as Polesie Mozyr. Between 1987 and 1991, they played in the Belarusian SSR league. From 1992 till 1995, they played in the Belarusian First League. They changed their name to MPKC Mozyr since the 1994–95 season. MPKC stands for the Mozyr Industrial-Commercial Center. They won the First League the same year and made their debut in the Belarusian Premier League in fall 1995 season. They finished second in 1995 and won the championship in 1996, becoming the first team other than Dinamo Minsk to win it. FC Ataka Minsk was a Belarusian football club based in Minsk. They disbanded in 1998. History FC Ataka-407 Minsk was formed in 1986. In 1992 the team started playing in Belarusian Second League. In 1993, the team was renamed to Ataka-Aura. 1996 Belarusian First League
1996 Belarusian First League was the sixth season of 2nd level football championship in Belarus. It started in April and ended in November 1996. Team changes from 1995 season Winners of 1995 Belarusian First League ( Naftan-Devon Novopolotsk) were promoted to Belarusian Premier League. They were replaced by the lowest-placed team of 1995 Premier League (FC Bobruisk). Khimvolokno Grodno, who finished 15th, relegated to the Second League, but were disbanded before the start of 1996 season. They were replaced by best teams of 1995 Second League ( Maxim-Orsha and Stroitel Bereza). Stroitel Bereza, who finished only second in their Second League group, were promoted instead of MPKC-2 Minsk (who were ineligible for promotion as a farm club). FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk
FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk ( be, ФК Шахцёр Салігорск, ''FK Shakhtsyor Salihorsk'') is a Belarusian Premier League football club, playing in the city of Soligorsk (Salihorsk) . History The club was founded in 1961. During Soviet era Shakhtyor Soligorsk was playing in top or second division of the Belarusian SSR league, occasionally dropping to lower tiers (Minsk Oblast league) for a short time. In 1971, Shakhtyor absorbed two other local Soligorsk teams (Khimik and Gornyak). Their best results came at the end of Soviet days, when the team finished as league runners-up twice (1988, 1990) and won the Belarusian SSR Cup three times (1985, 1986, 1988). Since 1992, Shakhtyor has been playing in Belarusian Premier League. The team struggled through the 1990s, usually fighting against relegation. FC Torpedo Mogilev
FC Torpedo Mogilev is a Belarusian football club based in Mogilev. History The club was formed in 1959 as Kirovets Mogilev. During 1962–1963, the team played in the Belarusian SSR League, before submerging to regional and city level competitions. In 1979, the club was renamed to Torpedo Mogilev and joined the Belarusian SSR top league once again. They were third in 1979 and won their only championship title in 1982. The team began playing in the Belarusian Premier League in 1992. The first two seasons were most successful when they finished 7th (1992) and 8th (1992–93). After that, Torpedo could not get higher than 11th and mostly were struggling against relegation. In 1996, Torpedo were renamed to Torpedo-Kadino Mogilev.
