The 1991 Australian Football League AFL finals series, finals series was the 95th annual edition of the VFL/AFL final series, the Australian rules football play-off tournament staged to determine the winner of the 1991 AFL season, 1991 AFL Premiership season. The series ran over four weekends in September 1991, culminating with the 1991 AFL Grand Final at Waverley Park, AFL Park on 28 September 1991. The McIntyre "Final Five" system, which had operated from 1972 VFL season, 1972 until 1990 AFL season, 1990, was replaced by the First McIntyre "Final Six" system. The following season, it was replaced by the McIntyre System#Second McIntyre final six system, Second McIntyre "Final Six" system. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. 1948 VFL Grand Final
The 1948 VFL Grand Final and Grand Final Replay were a pair of Australian rules football games contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in October 1948. They were the 50th and 51st Grand Finals of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1948 VFL season. The Grand Final match, attended by 86,198 spectators on 2 October 1948, ended in a draw, the first time that a VFL Grand Final resulted in a draw. A replay was staged on 9 October 1948, attended by 52,226 spectators, in which Melbourne easily defeated Essendon by 39 points, marking that club's sixth VFL premiership. Stephen Tingay
Stephen Tingay (born 13 August 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. Recruited from Shepparton, Tingay was an energetic and hard working midfielder known for his blonde locks. The 1994 season was Tingay's best, being named as an All-Australian and finishing second in the Demons' best and fairest. Tingay played the first nine games of the 1999 season before severe hip and buttock injuries sidelined him for the rest of the year and all of the following 2000 season. Sydney selected Tingay in the pre-season draft for the 2001 season; however, Tingay's continued injuries forced him into retirement by the end of 2001 and he never played a senior game for Sydney. Steven Stretch
Steven Stretch (born 5 January 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and Fitzroy in the VFL/AFL and West Torrens in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). A wingman, Stretch won the 1987 Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Trophy for the Demon's best and fairest player. Stretch also played in 13 finals for the Demons including the 1988 VFL Grand Final. In 1994 he was traded to Fitzroy in the pre-season draft and played his final two seasons at the club. Steven's son Billy played for the Demons after being drafted in 2014 under the father-son rule. Andrew Obst
Andrew Obst (born 19 August 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL) and Port Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Port Adelaide (1987–1989, 1988–1999) Obst started his career in the South Australian Amateur Football League, representing the Australian Amateurs team at the 1988 Adelaide Bicentennial Carnival before playing for Port Adelaide. He was drafted to Melbourne with pick 37 in the 1987 VFL Draft but did not move until a few years later. Andrew was a member of Port Adelaide's 1999 SANFL premiership team. Darren Cuthbertson
Darren Cuthbertson (born 7 April 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the early 1990s. Cuthbertson had started out in the Melbourne Under-19s after coming to the club from Epping and is best remembered for a run of 19 goals in three weeks which he kicked in his fourth, fifth and sixth AFL games. Brett Lovett
Brett Lovett (born 20 May 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He also represented Victoria on six occasions. Recruited from Inverloch, Lovett played at half back for the Demons from 1986 until 1997. After retiring, he went on to coach Frankston in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 2003 to 2008. Lovett was appointed coach of Sandringham, also a VFL side, in October 2010. Sandringham and Lovett parted ways in October 2011 when Sandringham decided to return to a full-time coaching position. Lovett was appointed coach of fellow VFL club, Casey on 14 November 2011. Garry Lyon
Garry Peter Lyon (born 13 September 1967) is a former professional Australian rules football player and was captain of the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Since his retirement from football, he has been mainly an Australian rules football media personality, featuring on television, radio and in newspapers. He has also coached during the International Rules Series. Steven Febey
Steven Febey (born 19 August 1969) is a former Australian rules football player for the Melbourne Football Club from Devonport. He is the twin brother of Matthew Febey who he played beside for most of his career. Febey debuted in 1988 and was a regular in the team throughout the 1990s, wearing guernsey number 21. During the 2001 season he was dropped from the side but came back strongly to finish fourth in the best and fairest. When he retired in 2002 with 258 games to his name he held the record for most appearances by a player selected in the national draft. Graeme Yeats
Graeme Yeats (born 21 September 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne in the Australian Football League, VFL/AFL. A skilful and consistent defender/wingman, Yeats played 182 games with Melbourne, including 13 finals and the 1988 VFL Grand Final. He later played VFA/VFL football for Springvale Football Club, Springvale. In the 1996 VFL Grand Final, his mark on the goal-line and subsequent goal from a tight angle with 47 seconds remaining was the winning goal in Springvale's 3-point premiership win against Frankston Football Club, Frankston. Peter Rohde
Peter Rohde (born 19 November 1964) is a former Australian Football League (AFL) player and coach. Playing career Carlton Rohde came from the Bendigo region and made his Victorian Football League (VFL) debut for Carlton Football Club in 1985. He played total of 46 games and kicked six goals for the club from 1985 until 1987. Rohde left Carlton at the end of the 1987 season, because the Carlton coach Robert Walls had a low opinion of Rohde's playing ability and dropped him from the side during the 1987 finals campaign, when Carlton ended up winning the premiership. Melbourne Rohde transferred to Melbourne Football Club, where he played 117 games and kicked 22 goals from 1988 until he retired in 1995. Earl Spalding
Earl George Spalding (born 11 March 1965 in South Perth) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL), as well as for Perth and East Fremantle in the West Australian Football League. He is known as "the Duke" or "Snake" because of his unusual running style, and also the "golf ball" in reference to his surname.
