1988 Australian Open – Women's Singles
Steffi Graf defeated Chris Evert in the final, 6–1, 7–6(7–3) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1988 Australian Open. It was her first step towards completing the first, and so far only Grand Slam (tennis)#Golden Slam, Golden Slam in the history of pedestrian tennis. Hana Mandlíková was the defending champion, but was defeated by Graf in the quarterfinals. This tournament marked Evert's 34th (and last) appearance in a major singles final, an List of Grand Slam–related tennis records#Women's singles, all-time record. Widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, she was ranked world No. 1 for a record 377 weeks and won 22 major singles titles, the second-most since the start of the Open Era in 1968 and the third-most of all-time. In 1988, Graf became the first tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four major singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year. Bettina Bunge
Bettina Bunge (born 13 June 1963) is a retired German tennis player. Born in Adliswil, Switzerland, she was part of a large group of successful German players in the 1980s, which also included Steffi Graf, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, Sylvia Hanika, and Eva Pfaff. Monique Alicia Javer (born 22 July 1967) is an American-born former professional tennis player who represented Great Britain and was at one time the British number 1. She turned professional in 1985 and played her final professional match in 2000. During the course of her career she won one WTA singles title (the 1988 Singapore Open), reached four WTA semifinals and reached a career-high singles ranking of world No.56 (achieved 21 September 1992).
