1948 Tangerine Bowl
The 1948 Tangerine Bowl was an American college football bowl game played after the 1947 college football season, 1947 season, on January 1, 1948, at the Tangerine Bowl (stadium), Tangerine Bowl stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game was the second annual Tangerine Bowl, now known as the Citrus Bowl (game), Citrus Bowl, and featured the Catawba Indians football, Catawba Indians against the Marshall Thundering Herd. Background Catawba had appeared in the first Tangerine Bowl and beat Maryville College 31–6. This season, they were invited back to the bowl with a 10–1 record after having only one loss (to VMI Keydets football, VMI) early in the season, and entered the game with an 8-game winning streak. Catawba College
Catawba College is a private college in Salisbury, North Carolina. Founded in 1851 by the North Carolina Classis of the Reformed Church in Newton, the college adopted its name from its county of origin, Catawba County, before moving to its current home of Salisbury in 1925. Catawba College still holds loose ties with the successor to the Reformed Church, the United Church of Christ. It offers over 70 undergraduate degrees. The Marshall Thundering Herd is the intercollegiate athletic collection of teams that collectively represent the Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. 1998 Motor City Bowl
The 1998 Motor City Bowl matched the Marshall Thundering Herd and the Louisville Cardinals. Background Marshall was the only Division I-A or I-AA school to record 100 victories in the 1990s, and they had been in both Divisions for the decade. After twenty years of dominating Division I-AA and winning two championships, they moved to I-A starting with the 1997 season, joining the Mid-American Conference. In their first season, they won the MAC title and played in the 1997 Motor City Bowl, which they lost. Marshall, led by Chad Pennington at quarterback, was looking for their first ever bowl victory, having lost their first two. This was Louisville's first bowl game since the 1993 Liberty Bowl. John L. VMI Keydets Football
The VMI Keydets football team represents the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The Keydets compete in the Southern Conference of the NCAA Division I FCS, and are coached by Danny Rocco, named head coach on December 3, 2022. VMI plays their home contests at 10,000-seat Alumni Memorial Field, as they have since 1962. Historically VMI's biggest rival was Virginia Tech. Today, VMI's biggest rival is The Citadel, as the two teams have battled 72 times, with The Citadel leading the series 40–30–2.
