Catawba College is a private college in Salisbury, North Carolina. Founded in 1851 by the North Carolina wikt:classis, Classis of the Reformed Church in Newton, North Carolina, Newton, the college adopted its name from its county of origin, Catawba County, before moving to its current home of Salisbury in 1925. Catawba College still holds loose ties with the successor to the Reformed Church, the United Church of Christ. It offers over 70 undergraduate degrees. Phil Kirk
Phillip J. Kirk Jr. (born November 24, 1944) is a North Carolina political figure. He is a former chairman of the North Carolina State Board of Education (1997–2003) and a former president of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce (then known as North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry, or NCCBI). Kirk, a native of Rowan County, North Carolina and a graduate of Catawba College, worked as a newspaper reporter and taught English and journalism in public schools before entering politics. In 1970, he became the youngest person ever elected to the North Carolina Senate up to that time, representing Rowan County as a Republican. Vern Benson
Vernon Adair Benson (September 19, 1924 – January 20, 2014) was an infielder/outfielder, coach, scout and interim manager in American Major League Baseball. During his playing career, he stood 5'11" (180 cm) tall, weighed 180 pounds (82 kg), batted left-handed, and threw right-handed. Playing career Born in Granite Quarry, North Carolina, Benson attended Catawba College in nearby Salisbury. He debuted in the Majors with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1943 and had a second trial with the Mackmen in 1946, but most of his career would be spent in the organization of the St. Louis Cardinals. While he appeared in only 46 games for St. Louis between 1951–53, he was a fixture with the Cards' Rochester Red Wings and Columbus Red Birds Triple-A farm clubs as a player. The Citrus Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
