1937 Victorian Legislative Council Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 12 June 1937 to elect 17 of the 34 members of the state's Legislative Council for six year terms. MLC were elected using preferential voting. For the first time, voting became compulsory for elections for the Legislative Council, having been compulsory for the elections for the Legislative Assembly since 1927. However, the turnout increased from 10% to only 46%. Results Legislative Council Retiring Members Herbert Keck (UAP, Bendigo) died shortly before the election; no by-election was held. Percy Clarey
Percy James Clarey (20 January 189017 May 1960) was an Australian trade union leader and politician. He served as president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) from 1943 to 1949 and represented the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the Victorian Legislative Council (1937−1949) and Australian House of Representatives (1949−1960). Early life Clarey was born at Bairnsdale, Victoria, the fifth child of general agent Francis William Clarey and Jessie Littlejohn Clarey, née Lawson. Herbert Olney
Sir Herbert Horace Olney (26 November 1875 – 20 July 1957) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to produce merchant Charles Olney and Annie Elizabeth Capp. He attended Ballarat College and became an insurance worker, first for Manchester Fire Insurance and then for Colonial Mutual Fire Insurance. On 11 April 1898 he married Annie Lizette Trudgeon, with whom he had a daughter. He retired from insurance in 1927 and was chairman of a number of company boards. Daniel McNamara
Daniel Laurence McNamara (28 March 1876 – 28 December 1947) was an Australian politician. He was born at Pomborneit to farmer Michael McNamara and Mary Taff. He worked as a produce agent in Melbourne from 1906 to 1909, and in 1907 joined the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). He was involved in founding the Rural Workers Union in 1909 and represented both unions on the Trades Hall Council. From 1909 to 1947 he served on the Labor Party state executive. On 1 May 1915 he married Florence May Spinks, with whom he had three children. He was instrumental in the merger of the Rural Workers Union with the AWU and the Queensland General Workers Union (1912–13), and served on Berwick Shire Council from 1910 to 1910 (president 1906–07). Melbourne Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia). Melbourne Province was created in 1882 when Central Province was abolished in the redistribution of Provinces. Its area included central Melbourne, Carlton, Fawkner Park and Richmond. William Hearn and James Lorimer transferred from Central to Melbourne Province that year. In 1904, another redistribution occurred and Melbourne East Province, Melbourne North Province, Melbourne South Province, Melbourne West Province were created. James Kennedy (Australian Politician)
Sir James Arthur Kennedy (1882–1954) was an Australian politician and sportsman. Kennedy served as a minister in the Dunstan and Hollway Victorian state governments in the 1940s. He played Australian rules football for Essendon and Carlton during the early 1900s. He was the brother of fellow footballer Ted Kennedy. Henry Isaac Cohen (21 February 1872 – 20 December 1942) was an Australian barrister and politician. Personal life Isaac Henry Cohen, always known as Henry Isaac, was born in Melbourne to financier David Cohen and Rachael Marks, both of London. On 27 June 1901 he married Ethel Mary Keon of Launceston, Tasmania. Cohen retained Jewish associations but his wife was a Catholic; their three sons and two daughters, who adopted the name Keon-Cohen, were brought up as Anglicans and attended Presbyterian schools. William MacAulay
William MacAulay (31 October 1893 – 17 May 1957) was an Australian politician. He was born in Binginwarri to Scottish-born farmer Allan MacAulay and Margaret Ann Enwen. George Martley Davis
George Martley Davis (7 January 1860 – 20 July 1938) was an Australian politician. He was born in Emerald Hill to grazier George Davis and Mary Critchley Sylvester.
