Melbourne Province
Melbourne Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia). Melbourne Province was created in 1882 when Central Province was abolished in the redistribution of Provinces. Its area included central Melbourne, Carlton, Fawkner Park and Richmond. William Hearn and James Lorimer transferred from Central to Melbourne Province that year. In 1904, another redistribution occurred and Melbourne East Province, Melbourne North Province, Melbourne South Province, Melbourne West Province were created. The number of members representing Melbourne Province were reduced from four to two that year. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Robert Reid (Australian Politician, Born 1842)
Robert Reid (18 October 1842 – 12 May 1904) was a Scotland, Scottish-born Australian politician. Born in Leven, Fife, he migrated to Australia, arriving in Hobson's Bay on the ''Ralph Waller'' from Liverpool on 7 April 1855, the ship having struck an iceberg near the Desolation Island (South Shetland Islands), Island of Desolation. He worked in the retail trade before becoming a businessman. In 1891, after the death of Nunn, co-owner with Buckley of Buckley & Nunn store, Reid bought the business and sold it on in London in 1892 for £300,000 (). In October 1892 Reid was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne Province as a Free Trade Party, Free Trader, becoming Minister for Defence and Minister for Health. Reid lost his ministerial positions in 1894, but was re-created Minister for Health and also Minister for Public Instruction in 1902. Benjamin Benjamin
Sir Benjamin Benjamin (2 September 1834 – 7 March 1905) was an Australian businessman and politician. He was mayor of Melbourne between 1887 and 1889, before serving as a member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1889 to 1892. Early life and education Benjamin was born in London, Middlesex, on 2 September 1834 to Moses Benjamin and Catherine Benjamin (''née'' Moses). His family left for Australia in 1843 on a boat named ''London''. He was educated in a school run by the Reverend William Jarrett, a Congregational Church minister. Working life After leaving school he joined M. Benjamin & Sons, his father's import and export business. In 1864 he and his brother-in-law Edward Cohen went into business together. He retired from active involvement in business in 1878.
