1937 South American Championship
The fourteenth edition of the South American Championship of football was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 27 December 1936 to 1 February 1937. The participating countries were Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay thus making this the first edition in which more than five teams took part of the event. Bolivia, and Colombia (a new CONMEBOL member) withdrew from the tournament. Estadio Alvear Y Tagle
The Estadio Alvear y Tagle was a stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The venue had a capacity for 40,000 spectators and was located on Alvear (now Del Libertador Avenue and Tagle street), in the Recoleta district. Opened in 1923, it was rented and operated by Club Atlético River Plate, being used as its home venue until the club inaugurated the Estadio Monumental in 1938. History In 1922, Club Atlético River Plate signed a contract with British company Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway to rent a land in Recoleta district. The contract was for a period of 5 years, for m$n 500 per month. The purpose was to build a stadium to host River Plate home football matches. The stadium was built and inaugurated in 1923 to serve as home venue for Club Atlético River Plate football team. The official grandstand, built on Alvear avenue, had 120 meters long. Severino Varela
Severino Varela Puente (14 September 1913 – 29 July 1995) was a Uruguayan footballer who played as a striker. With 15 goals, he is Uruguay's all-time top scorer at the Copa América. Career Varela started his playing career in 1932 with River Plate Montevideo. In 1935, he signed for Peñarol where he was part of the team that won four successive league titles between 1935 and 1938. Varela was part of Uruguay squad which won 1942 South American Championship, and remainis as third joint top scorer in the history of Copa América. In 1942, Varela joined Argentine side Boca Juniors for $32.800. Boca also transferred Emeal and Laferrara to Peñarol as part of the transaction. Aurelio Ramón González Benítez (25 September 1905 in Luque, Paraguay – 9 July 1997) was a Paraguayan Association football, football player. González is one of the greatest football players of Paraguay, considered by many as the second best player behind Arsenio Erico. He started his career in Sportivo Luqueño and then moved to Olimpia Asunción, Olimpia of Asunción where he spent the rest of his career winning several championships, most notably the three consecutive national championships obtained by Olimpia in 1927, 1928 and 1929. Francisco Varallo
Francisco Antonio “Pancho” Varallo (; – ) was an Argentine football forward. He played for the Argentina national team from 1930 to 1937. He represented Argentina at the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930. During his career, Varallo won four Primera División titles (one with Gimnasia y Esgrima LP and three with Boca Juniors) and with 194 goals in 222 official matches, is Boca Juniors' 3rd. highest all-time leading goalscorer. Carlos Alejandro Villanueva Martínez (4 June 1908 – 11 April 1944) was a Peruvian association football, footballer who played for Alianza Lima and the Peru national football team. Teodoro "Lolo" Fernández Meyzán (20 May 1913 – 17 September 1996) was a Peruvian professional footballer who played as forward. All his football work was carried out as a player of the Universitario de Deportes of the Peruvian First Division. He was champion, best player and top scorer in the 1939 Copa América. He is the top idol of Universitario de Deportes and Peruvian First Division.
