José Simões Dias (1844 in Benfeita, Arganil – 3 March 1899 in Lisbon) was a Portuguese poet, short-story writer and literary critic, as well as politician and pedagogue. His poetry is generally affiliated with the later Romantic tradition, sometimes termed Ultra-Romanticism, although some of his poems, popular in tone, can be seen to betray an affinity for the Realist aesthetics that was then beginning to blossom in Portuguese letters. Manuel Maria Sarmento Rodrigues (15 June 1899 – 1 August 1979) was a naval officer, colonist and professor. He was born in 1899 in Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Portugal. He attended a secondary school in Bragança, Portugal, Bragança and attended the University of Coimbra. He entered the Portuguese Naval School, Naval School and concluded the marine course in 1921. As a junior officer, he embarked in the ''República (Portuguese ship), República'' on board which he was accompanied by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral through the South Atlantic Ocean, South Atlantic and in the ''Lis (Portuguese ship), Lis'', he was the aide-de-camp of the Governor-General of Portuguese India and on board the transport ''Pêro de Alenquer''. Jesus Muñoz Crespo
Jesus Muñoz Crespo (11 September 1899 – 11 September 1979) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a forward. Career Crespo arrived at Benfica in 1917, at the age of 18. He made his official debut in the first game of the 1917–18 edition of the Campeonato de Lisboa, on 16 December 1917. Capable of playing either as inside forward or centre-forward, in a 2-3-5 formation, he was mainly used as inside forward and partnered with José Simões, while both supported players like Alberto Augusto, Tavares, or Mário Carvalho. On 16 December 1923, he received his only cap, in a 0-3 loss against Spain played on Avenida de la Reina Victoria, Sevilla. Over the course of 12 seasons, he played more than 100 matches, a club record at that time, retiring at age 30, with his last match on 24 February 1929. Armando Artur da Silva Machado (Lisbon, 1899-1974) was a Portuguese fadista, guitarist and "viola" player, meaning the viola caipira guitar. He performed with his wife Maria de Lourdes Machado, a nurse who became an accomplished Fado singer. José Pimenta (born 30 December 1899 – after 1928) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a forward for Benfica. He was also in the military. He made his debut on Benfica on 29 December 1918 in Lisbon, against Sporting, in a 3-1 victory. The next year he won the 1919/20 edition of the regional championship Campeonato de Lisboa. Fernando Santos Costa
Fernando dos Santos Costa (December 19, 1899 - October 15, 1982) was an officer of the Portuguese Army, who was a member of the Government of Salazar, from 1936 to 1958. In the Government, he held the offices of Under-Secretary of State of War (1936-1944), Minister of War (1944-1950) and Minister of National Defense (1950-1958). Early career Santos Costa and Salazar met at the University of Coimbra in 1917, where they were both members of a Catholic student organisation, the Academic Centre for Christian Democracy. Santos Costa went on to join the Army and, as a second-lieutenant, took part in the Monarchy of the North, an abortive royalist uprising against the Portuguese Republic in 1919. Still later, he was involved in the 1926 coup, that by degrees turned Portugal into an entrenched right-wing dictatorship.
