The Continental Cup 1998–99 was the second edition of the IIHF Continental Cup. The season started on September 18, 1998, and finished on December 29, 1998. IIHF Continental Cup
The Continental Cup is a second-level ice hockey tournament for European clubs (behind Champions Hockey League), begun in 1997 after the discontinuing of the European Cup. It was intended for teams from countries without representatives in the European Hockey League, with participating teams chosen by the countries' respective ice hockey associations. Hans Dobida served as chairman of the Continental Cup until 2018. Format The competition began in 1997–98 with 42 clubs from 26 countries, which expanded to 48 teams for the next two years. The tournament was played in seeded rounds of qualifying groups. There were three rounds of qualifying groups, with winners of qualifying groups progressing to the next round. The three winners of the third round groups entered the semifinals, along with the host club. Tartu Kalev-Välk
Tartu Välk 494 is an ice hockey team located in Tartu, Estonia, and playing in the Coolbet Hokiliiga, the top tier of ice hockey in Estonia. They play home games at the Lõunakeskus Ice Hall. History Tartu Välk 494 was founded in April 1994, and the team won their first Meistriliiga Championship in 1997. Since then, team have gone on to win the league a further 10 times, with the most recent victory coming in 2020. In addition, they have twice won the now-defunct Estonian Cup, in 1997 and 1998. Steaua Rangers
Steaua Rangers Are a Romanian ice hockey team that currently plays in the Romanian Hockey League. They play their home games at Mihai Flamaropol. History The hockey team was founded in 1951 as CCA București and existed alongside other sections (e.g., football, handball, basketball) in the Steaua București sports club. In 1961, their name was changed to CSA Steaua București. With 40 championship titles and 31 cup victories, Steaua is the most successful ice hockey team in Romania. They last won the Championship in 2006, and the Cup in 2008. In 2008, Steaua joined the MOL Liga along with CS Progym Gheorgheni in addition to the Romanian Hockey League. Akademika Sofia was an ice hockey team in Sofia, Bulgaria. They folded in 2008. History The club was founded in 1949 as part of the Akademik Sofia sports club and existed until 1993 when they merged with CSKA Sofia.
