1998 Atlantic Championship Season
The 1998 Toyota Atlantic Championship season was contested over 13 rounds. All teams had to use Toyota engines. The KOOL Toyota Atlantic Championship Drivers' Champion was Lee Bentham driving for Forsythe Racing. Calendar Note: Race 3 stopped earlier due to rain, originally scheduled over 50 laps. Final points standings Driver For every race the points were awarded: 20 points to the winner, 16 for runner-up, 14 for third place, 12 for fourth place, 11 for fifth place, winding down to 1 point for 15th place. Lower placed drivers did not award points. Additional points were awarded to the pole winner (1 point) and to the driver leading the most laps (1 point). Lee Bentham
Lee Bentham (born July 27, 1970) is a Canadian former racing driver from Richmond Hill, Ontario. In 1990 and 1992 he competed in the Formula K karting World Championship series. He moved to cars in the Toyota Atlantic series in 1995 in a successful partial-season program that managed to place Bentham on the podium twice and finished 8th in points. The following year Bentham captured 7 podiums and was the series runner-up. 1997 was less successful as he only finished 5th in series points. He also competed for Forsythe Racing in the Indy Lights series that season and won on the oval at Gateway International Raceway and finished 5th in points. 1998 was Bentham's breakout year as he captured three wins and seven podiums on his way to the Toyota Atlantic Championship for Forsythe Championship Racing. 1999 was his final year of top-level racing and was another year in Atlantics where he won a single race and finished 6th in points. Matt Sielsky
Matt Sielsky (born 1 May 1978) is an American former racing driver. Sielsky competed in USF2000, Atlantic Championship among other series. Career The Chicago, Illinois based driver started his racing career in karting. In 1993 Sielsky won his first World Karting Association national championship. Sielsky won the Restricted JR and US820 Junior class championships beating other drivers such as Sam Hornish Jr. After a year without national championships in 1994, Sielsky won two out of four classes he competed in 1995. Sielsky won the Piston Port and 100cc Pro Street classes. For 1996 Sielsky and fellow competitor Jeff Shafer landed Kool sponsorship after a talent competition. With the sponsorship deal Sielsky joined Team Green in the USF2000 for 1996 and 1997. Jeff Shafer
Jeff Shafer (Born February 20, 1975) is a former racing driver. Shafer competed in USF2000, Atlantic Championship among other series. Career Shafer started his racing career in karting. Shafer won the IKF Sprint Grand National. At Iowa International Raceway in Marshalltown, Iowa, Shafer won the Yamaha KT100S Heavy class. Shafers first experience in autosport came at the Winfield Racing School in France. A strong performance earned him a scholarship for the 1996 Skip Barber championship. At Las Vegas Motor Speedway Shafer was one of two winners of the inaugural Team Green Academy Young American Driver Development Program, the other being Matt Sielsky. With Team KOOL Green Shafer competed in the 1997 U.S. F2000 National Championship. Racing the experimental Nemesis 97 chassis Shafer struggled in the opening rounds. Molson Indy Vancouver
Molson Indy Vancouver was an annual Champ Car race held in a street circuit near BC Place and running past Science World in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada held in July, August or September from 1990 to 2004. On September 2, 1990, the first race took place on the original circuit, which was won by Al Unser Jr. From 1998, a new circuit was created to the east of the old Pacific Place, where only a small part of the original circuit was used. The circuit was popular with drivers and often produced an entertaining race. For most of its fifteen years, the Vancouver Indy attracted in excess of 100,000 spectators over the course of its weekends, and in 1996 held the Canadian single-day sporting event attendance record until it was beaten by the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal that year. Road America
Road America is a motorsport road course located near Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, United States on Wisconsin Highway 67. It has hosted races since the 1950s and currently hosts races in the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series, WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, IndyCar Series, SCCA Pirelli World Challenge, ASRA, AMA Superbike series, and SCCA Pro Racing's Trans-Am Series. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is a road course auto racing facility located in Troy Township, Morrow County, Ohio, United States, just outside the village of Lexington. Mid-Ohio has also colloquially become a term for the entire north-central region of the state, from south of Sandusky to the north of Columbus. Circuit Trois-Rivières
The Circuit Trois-Rivières is a street circuit in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada. The circuit has been the home of the annual Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, the longest-running street race in North America, since 1967. The circuit is located on the Terrain de l'Exposition (fairgrounds) and is unusual in that it passes through ''Porte Duplessis'', the narrow concrete gateway of the grounds at turn 3. Grand Prix Of Toronto
The Grand Prix of Toronto (known for sponsorship reasons as the Honda Indy Toronto) is an annual Indy Car race, held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Originally known as the Molson Indy Toronto, it was part of the Champ Car World Series from 1986 to 2007. After a one-year hiatus, it has been part of the NTT IndyCar Series schedule since 2009. Grand Prix Of Cleveland
The Grand Prix of Cleveland was an Indy car event in the CART series, held annually at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio. The race celebrated its milestone 25th anniversary in 2006. The race was most recently held in 2007. After the 2008 open wheel unification, the 2008 race had to be cancelled. Attempts to revive the race have not yet come to fruition. Normally a fully functioning airport year-round, Burke Lakefront Airport was shut down for the week leading up to the event each year, requiring careful maintenance of the runways in order to keep them safe for cars at high speeds. The race was very popular amongst fans, as the long, wide, runways (much wider and longer than typical courses) allowed for side-by-side racing, fast speeds, and superb passing zones around the entire track.
