1997 UIAA Climbing World Championships
The 1997 UIAA Climbing World Championships, the 4th edition, were held in Paris, France, from 31 January to 1 February 1997. It was organized by the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA). The championships consisted of lead and speed events. Medalists Lead In men's lead, François Petit claimed the title. The 15-year-old Chris Sharma took silver, while the defending champion François Legrand took bronze. In women's lead, Liv Sansoz took the win. Muriel Sarkany (born August 5, 1974) is a Belgian professional rock climber who specialized in competition lead climbing where she is known for winning five Climbing World Cups. She also specialized in outdoor sport climbing and is considered the fourth-ever female climber in history to redpoint a -graded route, which was ''PuntX'', in Gorges du Loup, in FRA. Climbing career Competition climbing Sarkany started climbing at the age of 17 and at the age of 18 started participating in international lead climbing competitions. She became Youth World Champion in Basel in 1992. She won the silver medal three times for lead climbing at the World Championships (1997, 1999, and 2001), and the gold medal in 2003. IFSC Climbing World Championships
The IFSC Climbing World Championships are the biennial world championships for competition climbing organized by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). This event determines the male and female world champions in the three disciplines of sport climbing: lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing. Since 2012, a Combined ranking is also determined, for climbers competing in all disciplines, and additional medals are awarded based on that ranking. The first event was organized in Frankfurt in 1991. Hans Florine (born June 18, 1964) is an American rock climber, who holds the record for the number of ascents of Yosemite Valleys El Capitan and is known for holding the speed record on '' The Nose'' of Yosemite’s El Capitan 8 different times. Hans' last speed record on The Nose was accomplished with Alex Honnold for climbing '' The Nose'' in 2:23:46 (2 hours, 23 minutes and 46 seconds), on June 17, 2012. In addition to climbing El Capitan over 175 times, Hans also holds the record for the number of ascents of ''The Nose'' climbing it more than 111 times. Yuji Hirayama
Yuji Hirayama (平山ユージ; born February 23, 1969) is a Japanese rock climber specializing in lead climbing competitions. He won two Lead World Cups, in 1998 (becoming the first Asian climber to win the title) and in 2000. He is notable for being the first-ever climber to onsight an route, and for his various speed records on El Capitan. Jean-Baptiste Tribout
Jean-Baptiste Tribout, or J.B. Tribout (born 14 December 1961) is a French rock climber and sport climber. Climbing history Tribout started climbing aged seven in Fontainebleau, France with his grandfather, a mountaineer, and also joined the youth section of the French Alpine Club. There he met other young climbers such as Catherine Destivelle. In 1982, he climbed his first 8a, ''Fritz the Cat'', at Saussois and in 1985 climbed his first 8b, ''Les braves gens'', in the Verdon Gorge. Liv Sansoz (born 12 February 1977) is a French professional rock climber, ice climber, and base jumper. She is known for being three times World Cup winner and twice World Champion in Lead climbing. She had a year off after a fall but returned and climbed every Alp over 4,000 metres. Climbing career Sansoz was born in Bourg-Saint-Maurice in 1977 and grew up in the alps where she discovered climbing. Her parents built her a climbing wall and by 16 she was in the French National team. She has twice been the world champion and she has won the World Cup three times. She lost her confidence for a year after she cracked a vertebra in her neck after a 10-metre fall. This ended her competitive career but she regained her confidence to climb.
