The 1997 Generali Open was a men's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Kitzbühel, Austria that was part of the World Series of the 1997 ATP Tour. It was the 42nd edition of the tournament and was held from 21 July until 27 July 1997. Tenth-seeded Filip Dewulf won the singles title. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. ATP World Series
The ATP International Series (known from 1990 to 1997 as the ATP World Series) was a series of professional tennis tournaments held internationally as part of the ATP Tour from 2000 to 2008. Filip Dewulf
Filip Dewulf (born 15 March 1972) is a former professional male tennis player from Belgium. In his career, he won two ATP Tour singles titles and one title in doubles. In 1997 he reached the semifinals of the French Open, his best singles result ever and the first Belgian tennis player (male or female) to reach the semi-final at a Grand Slam tournament. He defeated Cristiano Caratti, Fernando Meligeni, Albert Portas, Àlex Corretja and Magnus Norman before he was defeated in four sets by the eventual champion, Gustavo Kuerten. This was, according to Roland Garros itself, the best performance that a qualifier has performed at a French Open, and only the third time in Grand Slam history that a qualifier had reached a semi-final. Wayne Arthurs (tennis)
Wayne Arthurs (born 18 March 1971) is a retired Australian professional tennis player. Career His serve was his strongest weapon by far, and had been referred to as the "best in the world" by several of his fellow players, including Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, Thomas Johansson, and Ivo Karlović. He consistently had one of the highest ace counts on the ATP Tour and favours a serve-and-volley style of play. Arthurs has won 12 ATP doubles titles in his career. Julián Alonso Pintor (born 2 August 1977) is a Spanish-American former professional tennis player, who turned professional in 1995 and retired in 2003. He was known in tennis because of his powerful serve and Forehand compared with the Goran Ivanišević´s service. Thomas Buchmayer (born 14 February 1971) is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Biography Buchmayer, a left-handed player from Sankt Pölten, was coached by Jan Kukal. Turning professional in 1989, he made the round of 16 as a wildcard at Kitzbühel that year, withs wins over Tomás Carbonell and world number 12 Alberto Mancini. In 1991 he made his debut for the Austria Davis Cup team and featured in two World Group ties. He played a reverse singles match in the first, against Czechoslovakia in Prague, which he won over Karel Nováček, but the Austrians had already lost the tie. His other tie was a qualifier in Manchester against Great Britain. He lost the opening singles match to Jeremy Bates in four sets, then later played in the last of the reserve singles, by which time the British team had taken Austria's place in the World Group. Thomas Strengberger
Thomas Strengberger (born 5 October 1975) is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Career A doubles specialist, Strengberger had the best performance of his career at the 1997 Austrian Open, where he and partner Thomas Buchmayer were surprise finalists, having entered the tournament as wildcards. They upset the top seeded pairing of Luis Lobo and Andrei Olhovskiy in the semi-final, but were unable to defeat Wayne Arthurs and Richard Fromberg in the decider. The Austrian did well at his home event again in 2001, making the quarter-finals, this time with Wolfgang Schranz as his partner.
