1997 Davis Cup World Group
The World Group was the highest level of Davis Cup competition in 1997. The first-round losers went into the Davis Cup World Group qualifying round, and the winners progressed to the quarterfinals and were guaranteed a World Group spot for 1998. France were the defending champions, but were eliminated in the first round. Sweden won the title, defeating the United States in the final, 5–0. The final was held at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 28 to 30 November. It was the Swedish team's 6th Davis Cup title overall. Davis Cup
The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition. The most successful countries over the history of the tournament are the United States (winning 32 titles and finishing as runners-up 29 times) and Australia (winning 28 titles, including six with New Zealand as Australasia, and finishing as runners-up 19 times).
