1996 Illawarra Steelers Season
The 1996 Illawarra Steelers season was the fifteenth in the club's history. They competed in the Australian Rugby League's 1996 Optus Cup season, finishing in 14th place on the ladder, missing out on the finals for the fourth year in a row. The Reserve Grade and President's Cup teams both missed out on their respective Grand Finals by one game, whilst the junior Steelers - the S.G. Ball and Harold Matthew's sides both won their competitions. Allan McMahon
Allan McMahon (9 August 1954 – 23 May 2003), also known by the nickname of "Macca", was an Australian professional rugby league footballer and coach. He was an Australian test player and was a coach of the Canberra Raiders, Newcastle Knights and Illawarra Steelers. Playing career McMahon played a total of 148 games for the Balmain Tigers of whom he also captained on numerous occasion. He also played for the Newtown Jets, the Canberra Raiders and was a member of the 1978 Kangaroo tour squad. David Cox (rugby League)
David Cox is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s. He played for Canberra and Illawarra in the ARL/NRL competitions. Playing career Cox made his first grade debut for Canberra in round 2 of the 1995 ARL season against Penrith at Bruce Stadium. Cox played off the interchange bench in Canberra's 34-12 victory. After one season with Canberra, Cox signed for Illawarra. In round 12 of the 1997 ARL season, Cox scored his first try in the top grade during a 28-28 draw with South Sydney. David Riolo
David Riolo (born 20 April 1972) is a former Italy international rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s for Illawarra and Parramatta. Background Riolo was born in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Overview Riolo played fullback over the course of his nine-year career in the Australian Rugby League competition. He also represented Italy in 1999 Mediterranean Cup and in the Rugby League Emerging Nations Tournament in 2000. Wayne Richards
Wayne Richards is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s. A Country New South Wales representative forward, he played his club football for the Newcastle Knights (with whom he won the 1997 ARL premiership), the Illawarra Steelers and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. 1991–1996 Richards made his first grade debut as a replacement player for the Newcastle Knights in 1991. He remained with the Knights until the end of the 1994 season when he signed with the Illawarra Steelers in search of regular first team appearances. Brendon Reeves
Brendon Reeves (born 16 July 1976) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played for the Illawarra Steelers, Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and the Northern Eagles in the National Rugby League (NRL). He played at fullback. Reeves made his ARL debut in round 7 of the 1996 season for the Illawarra Steelers against the South Queensland Crushers. Playing career Reeves, who came from the Riverina town of Quandialla in country NSW, was a member of Yanco's University Shield open age rugby league side, traveled to Darwin for the Australian rugby league championships and also represented NSW Combined High Schools in rugby union. Neil Piccinelli
Neil Piccinelli (born 4 March 1967) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He played with the Illawarra Steelers, Hunter Mariners and the Newcastle Knights. Most notable was his stint with the Steelers from 1989–1996. He was named in an Illawarra 25th anniversary "Team of Steel" at second-row. Playing career Piccinelli made his first grade debut for Illawarra against St George in Round 1 1989. Brendan O'Meara is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. Paul McGregor (born 31 December 1967) is an Australian professional rugby league coach who was until August 2020, the head coach of the St. George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL, and a former professional rugby league footballer who played as a in the 1990s and 2000s. Brad Mackay
Brad Mackay (born 1969 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A versatile for the St George Dragons, Illawarra Steelers, Western Reds and the joint-venture of St. George Illawarra Dragons, he also represented New South Wales in the State of Origin and Australia. Brad Hepi
Brad Hepi (born February 11, 1972) is a New Zealand rugby league player who played professionally in both England and Australia. Early years Hepi attended Kelston Boys' High School and captained their first XV rugby union team. Playing career Hepi played in the 1986 and 1988 Pacific Cups for the New Zealand Māori. In 1989 he moved to England, joining Carlisle RLFC. He then had a very successful spell with Workington Town which saw the club promoted from the third division to the first in two seasons, winning the Divisional Premiership against London Broncos along the way. Town initially struggled in the top flight and found themselves at the bottom of the league at Christmas 1994.
