1996 Clarence State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Clarence on 25 May 1996 following the resignation of sitting member, Ian Causley (), to contest federal seat of Page at the 1996 election. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Orange, Pittwater, Southern Highlands and Strathfield. All seats were retained by the Liberal-National Parties, with the exception of Clarence, that was won by the Labor Party with a swing on a two-party preferred basis of 13.96%. The successful ALP candidate was Harry Woods who was the sitting member for the federal seat of Page when he was defeated at the 1996 federal election by Ian Causley, ironically the previous member for Clarence. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Ian Causley
Ian Raymond Causley (19 October 1940 – 27 April 2020) was an Australian politician. He was a National Party of Australia, Nationals member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Division of Page, New South Wales from 1996 to 2007. Early life Causley was born on 19 October 1940 in Maclean, New South Wales, the son of Hilda Jean (née Lewis) and Samuel Arthur Causley. His father was a fourth-generation sugarcane farmer . Causley attended Chatsworth Island Public School and Maclean High School. He won a scholarship to attend the University of New England (Australia), University of New England, but instead chose to work as a sugarcane cutter and save up to purchase his own property. He became president of the Clarence River Cane Growers' Association as well as a director of the New South Wales Sugar Milling Co-operative and a member of the New South Wales Cane Growers' Council. The Division of Page is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division is named after the Right Honourable Sir Earle Page, the second leader of the Country Party of Australia and the Prime Minister of Australia after the death of Joseph Lyons in 1939. The division was proclaimed at the redistribution of 11 October 1984, and was first contested at the 1984 federal election. Since its creation, Page has usually been a marginal seat, frequently changing hands between the National Party and the Labor Party, with neither party gaining more than 55% of the two party preferred vote at any election except for the 1984 election, the 2019 election and the 2022 Australian federal election . 1996 Southern Highlands State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Southern Highlands on 25 May 1996. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the sitting member, former Premier of New South Wales John Fahey (), who vacated the seat to contest the federal electorate of Macarthur at the 1996 Australian federal election. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Clarence, Orange, Pittwater and Strathfield. Four of the five recontested seats were retained by the Liberal-National Coalition, with the exception of Clarence. Two-party Preferred
In Australian politics, the two-party-preferred vote (TPP or 2PP) is the result of an election or opinion poll after preferences have been distributed to the highest two candidates, who in some cases can be independents. For the purposes of TPP, the Liberal/National Coalition is usually considered a single party, with Labor being the other major party. Typically the TPP is expressed as the percentages of votes attracted by each of the two major parties, e.g. "Coalition 50%, Labor 50%", where the values include both primary votes and preferences. The TPP is an indicator of how much swing has been attained/is required to change the result, taking into consideration preferences, which may have a significant effect on the result. The TPP assumes a two-party system, i.e. that after distribution of votes from less successful candidates, the two remaining candidates will be from the two major parties. Harry Francis Woods (born 23 December 1947) was an Australian politician. He was the member for Page, New South Wales in the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Australian Labor Party from the March 1990 general election to his defeat in the March 1996 general election by the National Party's Ian Causley, who was the New Wales South State member for Clarence when he resigned to contest Page.
