A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Strathfield on 25 May 1996 following the resignation of sitting member, Paul Zammit (), to contest federal seat of Lowe at the 1996 election. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Clarence, Orange, Pittwater and Southern Highlands. All seats were retained by the Liberal-National Parties, with the exception of Clarence. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Electoral District Of Strathfield
Strathfield is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It was previously represented by Jodi McKay of the Labor Party until her resignation in 2021. Jason Yat-Sen Li won the by-election on the 12 February 2022 to succeed McKay. It was first created in 1988 and derives its name from the suburb of the same name. Paul Zammit
Paul John Zammit (born 28 April 1941) is a former Australian Liberal politician. He was born into the Maltese-Egyptian community in Alexandria, Egypt, the son of a Maltese father and a Greek mother. He and his family migrated to Australia in 1955, aboard SS ''Strathnaver'', and settled in the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl. Zammit was a businessman before entering politics. He was the member for the state electorate of Burwood from 1984 to 1988. After Burwood was abolished, he was elected as the member for Strathfield at the 1988 state election. In 1991, he was made Assistant Minister to the Premier Nick Greiner and held that post when John Fahey took over as Premier in 1992. In 1996, Zammit stepped down from state parliament to contest the federal Division of Lowe, which he won. Zammit attracted criticism for announcing that he would seek Liberal pre-selection for Lowe a day after he had been re-elected in Strathfield. Division Of Lowe
The Division of Lowe was an Australian Electoral Division in the state of New South Wales. It was located in the inner western suburbs of Sydney, on the south shore of the Parramatta River. It included the suburbs of Drummoyne, Five Dock, Croydon, Croydon Park, Burwood, Enfield, Homebush, Strathfield, Concord, Rhodes, Canada Bay, Cabarita, Abbotsford and Mortlake. The division was named after the Rt Hon Robert Lowe, 1st Viscount Sherbrooke, a former Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, and former Home Secretary of the United Kingdom. The division was proclaimed at the redistribution of 11 May 1949, and was first contested at the 1949 federal election. A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Clarence on 25 May 1996 following the resignation of sitting member, Ian Causley (), to contest federal seat of Page at the 1996 election. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Orange, Pittwater, Southern Highlands and Strathfield. All seats were retained by the Liberal-National Parties, with the exception of Clarence, that was won by the Labor Party with a swing on a two-party preferred basis of 13.96%. 1996 Southern Highlands State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Southern Highlands on 25 May 1996. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the sitting member, former Premier of New South Wales John Fahey (), who vacated the seat to contest the federal electorate of Macarthur at the 1996 Australian federal election. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Clarence, Orange, Pittwater and Strathfield. Four of the five recontested seats were retained by the Liberal-National Coalition, with the exception of Clarence. In Southern Highlands, there was three-cornered-contest between coalition partners, the Liberal and parties. Despite the Nationals candidate polling the highest number of first preference votes, the Liberal Party retained the seat with a swing of 8.00% against them on a two-candidate-preferred basis. Two-party Preferred
In Australian politics, the two-party-preferred vote (TPP or 2PP) is the result of an election or opinion poll after preferences have been distributed to the highest two candidates, who in some cases can be independents. For the purposes of TPP, the Liberal/National Coalition is usually considered a single party, with Labor being the other major party. Typically the TPP is expressed as the percentages of votes attracted by each of the two major parties, e.g. "Coalition 50%, Labor 50%", where the values include both primary votes and preferences. The TPP is an indicator of how much swing has been attained/is required to change the result, taking into consideration preferences, which may have a significant effect on the result. The TPP assumes a two-party system, i.e. that after distribution of votes from less successful candidates, the two remaining candidates will be from the two major parties. Bruce MacCarthy
Bruce Edward MacCarthy (born 15 October 1948) is a former Australian politician. He was the Liberal Party member for Strathfield in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 1999. MacCarthy was born in Denistone, a suburb of Sydney, to parents Thornton and Constance. He attended Homebush Boys' High School, graduating in 1965. He attended the University of Sydney from 1966 to 1968, where he received a Bachelor of Science ( Pure Mathematics), and joined the Liberal Party on 14 March 1967. On 8 August 1974 he married Leanne Gaye Hilder at Concord, with whom he had three daughters. He received a Bachelor of Economics (Public Finance) in 1976 from the University of New England, and worked as a public sector manager. His most prominent position was as Manager of Public Affairs for the Electricity Association of New South Wales, 1988–95.
