Western Soccer League
Western Soccer Alliance was a professional soccer league featuring teams from the West Coast of the United States and Western Canada. The league began in 1985 as the Western Alliance Challenge Series. In 1986, it became the Western Soccer Alliance. In 1989, it existed for a single year as the Western Soccer League before merging with the American Soccer League to form the American Professional Soccer League in 1990. History Origins After the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984 and the United Soccer League in 1985, four independent teams—F.C. Portland, F.C. Seattle, San Jose Earthquakes and Victoria Riptides—created the Western Alliance Challenge Series in the summer of 1985. John Doyle (soccer, Born 1966)
John Joseph Doyle (born March 16, 1966) is an American retired soccer player who played professionally in both Europe and the United States including the Western Soccer League, American Professional Soccer League and Major League Soccer. He was the 1995 A-League Defender of the Year and the 1996 MLS Defender of the Year. He also earned fifty-three caps with the U.S. national team between 1987 and 1994 including two games at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He was a member of the U.S. team at the 1988 Summer Olympics and was most recently the general manager of the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer before resigning on August 29, 2016. Youth Doyle attended Washington High School in Fremont, California where he played on the boys' soccer team. The team won the league championship Doyle's senior year. Scott Benedetti
Scott "Benny" Benedetti (born November 13, 1966 in Portland, Oregon) is an American retired soccer player. He began his professional career with the semi-professional F.C. Portland in 1986 and ended it with the U.S. second division club Portland Timbers in 2005. While he spent most of his career in the U.S. divisions, he had just over a season in Major League Soccer and half a season in the Primera División de México with UNAM Pumas. He earned one cap with the U.S. national team in 1996. He played in such places as South Korea, Thailand, England, Austria and Scotland. High school and college Benedetti attended Centennial High School in Gresham, Oregon. Benedetti attended the University of Portland where he played men's soccer for Clive Charles from 1985 to 1989. Jeff Hooker
Jeff Hooker (born March 21, 1965) is a retired U.S. soccer forward who currently coaches the University of Denver women's soccer team. Hooker earned twelve caps, scoring one goal, with the U.S. national team between 1984 and 1987 and was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic soccer team. He played professionally in the Western Soccer Alliance and American Professional Soccer League. Playing High school and college Hooker attended Walnut High School in Walnut, California where he played on the school's boys soccer team. He is tied for fifth on the California state high school list for most assists in a season (44 assists in 1982–1983). Hooker attended and played soccer at UCLA for three seasons between 1983 and 1987. He played as a freshman, but redshirted the 1984 season to play for the U.S. in the 1984 Summer Olympics. Chance Fry
Chance Fry (born June 29, 1964, in Bellevue, Washington) is a retired U.S. soccer forward who began his career straight out of high school with the Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League. With the collapse of the NASL, he moved to indoor soccer as well as U.S. minor leagues. Since retiring from playing, Fry has become a college soccer coach. He also earned five caps with the U.S. national team in 1984 and was the 1990 American Professional Soccer League leading goal scorer. Youth Chance Fry, a native of Bellevue, Washington, had a long career as a U.S. soccer player. Wes Wade
Wes Wade (born February 18, 1968) is a retired U.S. soccer player who spent two seasons playing outdoor soccer and fifteen playing indoor soccer. He was a six-time All Star and won five championships with two teams. Player Wade attended Maryville High School in Ohio, graduating in 1986. In 1989, he signed with the Arizona Condors of the Western Soccer League. While the Condors finished well out of playoff contention, Wade tied for second in goal scoring and finished fourth in the league in total points. In the fall of 1989, Wade began his long indoor career with the San Diego Sockers of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). Over the next three seasons, Wade and his teammates won three MISL championships. The league folded after the 1992 season and Wade jumped to the Wichita Wings of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL). Mark Kerlin
Mark Kerlin (born February 1, 1962) is a retired U.S. soccer forward who spent most of his career in indoor leagues. He also played one season in the Western Soccer League and two in the American Professional Soccer League. Kerlin, brother of Scott Kerlin, uncle of Drake Zane Kerlin, was born in Phoenix, Arizona, where he attended Moon Valley High School, graduating in 1980. In 1981, he signed with the Phoenix Inferno of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). He played each of the last fourteen games of the 1981–1982 season, scoring ten goals. In 1982, he moved outdoors with the Oklahoma City Slickers of the American Soccer League. In 1983, the team changed its name to the Phoenix Pride. Jerome Watson
Jerome Watson (born September 28, 1974) is an American former U.S. soccer forward who spent time in the Western Soccer Alliance, American Professional Soccer League and A-League. Watson grew up in San Diego, California and attended La Jolla High School. He played college soccer at the University of California, Davis, where he was named All-Conference four times and Conference MVP once. In 1988, Watson joined the San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer League. That year he led the Nomads in scoring with six goals which also put him in second place on the WSL goals list. The following season, he topped the league’s points list with 10 goals and 7 assists. Despite that, he was not selected to the WSL All Star team. Paul Wright (born July 29, 1969 in London, England) is a U.S. soccer forward who spent most of his career in the U.S. indoor leagues. He began his career with the San Diego Nomads in the Western Soccer Alliance, led the American Professional Soccer League in scoring in 1994 and played four seasons with the Kansas City Wizards in Major League Soccer. Aztec Bowl (stadium)
Aztec Bowl was a football stadium (a Works Progress Administration project) on the San Diego State University campus in San Diego, California. History Aztec Bowl hosted the San Diego State University Aztecs football team until they moved to San Diego Stadium in 1967. The stadium held 12,592 people at its peak and cost $500,000 to build. It was dedicated on October 3, 1936, before 7,500 people, after being completed earlier that year.
