1989 Mid Glamorgan County Council Election
The 1989 Mid Glamorgan County Council election was held in May 1989 and was the fifth full election to Mid Glamorgan County Council. It was preceded by the 1985 election and followed by the 1993 election. There were extensive boundary changes at this election, following ''The County of Mid Glamorgan (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1988''. Mid Glamorgan County Council
Mid Glamorgan County Council () was the upper-tier authority for the Welsh county of Mid Glamorgan between its creation in 1974 and its abolition in 1996. History Local government in England and Wales was reorganised in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. The old administrative county of Glamorgan was subdivided, forming Mid Glamorgan, South Glamorgan and West Glamorgan, which all came into existence on 1 April 1974. Mid Glamorgan was the largest and the poorest of the new county councils in Glamorgan. In 1974 it had a population of 531,847 and the council had a revenue expenditure of £60 million. Mid Glamorgan County Council was abolished in 1996 under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, with the districts in the area being reorganised to become unitary authorities taking over the functions previously performed by the county council. The Labour Party is a political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. Laura McAllister
Professor Laura McAllister (born 10 December 1964) is a Welsh academic, former international footballer and senior sports administrator. As a Wales women's national football team player, McAllister won 24 caps and served as team captain. She is currently Professor of Public Policy and the Governance of Wales at the Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University. She was formerly Professor of Governance at Liverpool University. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to sport. Jeff Jones (Welsh Politician)
Jeff Jones is a retired Labour Party politician from the town of Maesteg, Wales who rose to become Council Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council. He is known throughout South Wales as an outspoken local politician. Jones was brought up, the son of a miner and steelworker, in Maesteg. He studied political history at the London School of Economics. Jones was a councillor in Maesteg on the Mid Glamorgan County Council from 1981, initially for the Maesteg No. 2 ward, which became Maesteg East. From 1995 he became one of the two councillors for the Bridgend County Borough Council ward of Maesteg East. Pauline Jarman
Pauline Jarman (born 15 December 1945) is a Welsh politician. She was the Plaid Cymru National Assembly for Wales Member for South Wales Central from 1999 to 2003 as well as being leader of Rhondda Cynon Taff Council from 1999 - 2004. Educated at Mountain Ash Grammar School, she is a former Cynon Valley Borough Councillor and Mid Glamorgan County Councillor. Rhondda Cynon Taff Council Opposition Leader until 2022. Newcastle is an area and electoral ward of the town of Bridgend, Wales. The area includes the medieval Newcastle Castle. The ward elects councillors to Bridgend Town Council and Bridgend County Borough Council. Description Newcastle is located immediately west of Bridgend town centre and either side of Park Street. The area includes Bridgend County Borough Council headquarters next to the River Ogmore. Newcastle Higher is a community in Bridgend County Borough, south Wales. Located north west of Bridgend town centre it is made up of the townships of Pen-y-fai and Aberkenfig and straddles the M4 motorway. The community is home to several notable buildings, including the Pen-y-fai Hospital (the former Glamorganshire Lunatic Asylum), Court Coleman and All Saints Church. Eddie Thomas (boxer)
Edward Thomas MBE (27 July 1925 – 2 June 1997) was a Welsh professional boxer and boxing manager. He was born in Merthyr Tydfil. After a highly successful amateur boxing career, he turned professional in 1946. He won the Welsh welterweight title in 1948 and the British welterweight title in 1949, becoming the first Welsh fighter to hold the belt for more than 30 years. He won the European welterweight title in 1951, retaining it for only four months. He held the British Empire title for a period in the same year. Retiring in 1954, he became the manager of two of Britain's most successful boxing champions, Howard Winstone and Ken Buchanan, both of whom won world titles in their weight classes. He later served as mayor of Merthyr Tydfil. Thomas was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1984 Birthday Honours for services to boxing.
