1989 European Parliament Election In Greece
European Parliament elections were held in Greece on 18 June 1989 to elect the 24 Greek members of the European Parliament. Members were elected by party-list proportional representation. Results The 1994 European election was the third election to the European Parliament in which Greece participated. The European Parliament Election took place a few days before the national parliamentary elections and presaged the results of that election. The ruling PASOK under the leadership of Andreas Papandreou suffered strong losses against the opposition conservative New Democracy party and a coalition of the left and communist parties running as the Coalition of the Left and Progress. A new party Democratic Renewal reflected the organization of Costis Stephanopoulos who had left New Democracy and came in fourth, barely crossing the threshold. Greece is a European Parliament constituency for elections in the European Union covering the member state of Greece. It is currently represented by twenty-one Members of the European Parliament. Representation of Greece in the European Parliament Greece has had a delegation of Members of the European Parliament in the European Parliament since Greek accession to the EU in 1981. Originally, the Greek delegation numbered 25, but after 2004 that was reduced to 24 (due to the increase of the EU member countries). In 2009, it was further reduced to 22, and in 2014 to 21 MEPs. The 1989 European Parliament election was a European election held across the 12 European Community member states in June 1989. It was the third European election but the first time that Spain and Portugal voted at the same time as the other members (they joined in 1986). Overall turnout dropped to 59%. Electoral system There was no single voting system for all member states but each of them adopted its own method, established by national law. The United Kingdom used a one-round (first-past-the-post) system of 78 constituencies in England, Wales and Scotland, while in Northern Ireland 3 proportional seats were allocated. The Union of the Democratic Centre ( el, Ένωση Δημοκρατικού Κέντρου, abbr. ΕΔΗΚ, ''Enosi Dimokratikou Kentrou'', ''EDIK'') is a social liberal political party in Greece. The party was founded on 5 February 1976, two years after the end of the Greek military junta of 1967–74, asserting itself to be the ideological successor of the pre-1967 Centre Union party. EDIK was the result of the merger of Centre Union – New Forces and the Democratic Centre Union of Ioannis Zidgis. The Alternative Ecologists (), officially the Federation of Ecologists and Alternative Groups, was a federation of several groups created after the good performance of an autonomous electoral platform also called Alternative Ecologists in the 1989 European Parliament elections in Greece.
