Renewing Communist Ecological Left
The Renewing Communist Ecological Left ( el, Ανανεωτική Κομμουνιστική Οικολογική Αριστερά abbreviated AKOA) was a Eurocommunist party in Greece. Established in 1987 as KKE Interior – Renewing Left ( or ''ΚΚΕσ–ΑΑ''), the party resulted from the KKE Interior splitting in two. The party didn't play a major role in electoral politics during the 1990s. This would only change when in 2000, the party aligned with Synaspismos, and in 2004 became one of the founding forces of SYRIZA. AKOA held the status of an observer in the Party of the European Left until it eventually dissolved into Syriza in 2013. Ioannis Banias
Ioannis (Yannis) Banias ( el, Γιάννης Μπανιάς) (27 September 1939 – 29 March 2012) was a Greek politician, and former member of the Hellenic Parliament for the Coalition of Radical Left (2007–2009). Banias was born in Melissourgoi, Arta. He was a member of the Communist Party of Greece from the beginning of 1960s until its split in 1968 when he continued his activities in the Communist Party of Greece (Interior). He was elected president of the latter in 1982. He later participated in the formation of the Renewing Communist Ecological Left and was elected as the president of that group. He died in Athens on 28 March 2012, after a long battle with cancer. The Communist Party of Greece ( el, Κομμουνιστικό Κόμμα Ελλάδας, ''Kommounistikó Kómma Elládas'', KKE) is a political party in Greece. Founded in 1918 as the Socialist Labour Party of Greece and adopted its current name in November 1924. It is the oldest political party in modern Greek politics. The party was banned in 1936, but played a significant role in the Greek resistance and the Greek Civil War, and its membership peaked in the mid-1940s. Legalization of the KKE was restored following the fall of the Greek military junta of 1967–1974. The party has returned MPs in all elections since its restoration in 1974, and took part in a coalition government in 1989 when it got more than 13% of the vote. In order to be able to command a majority of 151 in the 300-seat Parliament, New Democracy had to secure the support of Theodoros Katsikis, Democratic Renewal's sole MP. Shortly after Mitsotakis was given a confidence vote, the Supreme Special Court, after a mistake in seat calculation was detected, gave the coalition a 152nd seat. European Parliament elections were held in Greece on 18 June 1989 to elect the 24 Greek members of the European Parliament. Members were elected by party-list proportional representation. Results The 1994 European election was the third election to the European Parliament in which Greece participated.
