1989 EuroBasket
The 1989 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1989, was the 26th FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. It was held in Yugoslavia between 20 and 25 June 1989. Eight national teams entered the event under the auspices of FIBA Europe, the sport's regional governing body. The Dom Sportova in Zagreb was the hosting venue of the tournament. The host, Yugoslavia, won its fourth FIBA European title by defeating the defending champions Greece, with a 98–77 score in the final. Yugoslavia's Dražen Petrović was voted the tournament's MVP. The five best teams in the final standings were given berths to the 1990 FIBA World Championship. Venues All games were played at the Dom Sportova in Zagreb. Richard Dacoury (born July 6, 1959, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast) is a former French professional basketball player. He retired in 1998, LNB Pro A#Players with the most French League championships won, as the basketball player who won the most French League titles during his career, with 9. Juan Antonio San Epifanio Ruiz (born 12 June 1959), most commonly known as "Epi", is a Spanish retired professional basketball player. He spent all of his club career playing with FC Barcelona. He was named the Mister Europa European Player of the Year in 1984, by the Italian basketball magazine '' Superbasket'', and the Best European Player of the 1980s decade, by the French sports newspaper ''L'Équipe''. He was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991. Arvydas Sabonis
Arvydas Romas Sabonis (; born December 19, 1964) is a Lithuanian former professional basketball player and businessman. Recognized as one of the best European players of all time, he won the Euroscar six times and the Mr. Europa Award twice. He played in a variety of leagues, including the Spanish ACB League, and spent seven seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Playing the center position, Sabonis won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics, in South Korea, for the Soviet Union, and later earned bronze medals at the 1992 Olympic Games and 1996 Olympic Games representing Lithuania. He retired from professional basketball in 2005. Sabonis was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1986 NBA draft, but he did not play his first NBA game until 1995, at the age of 30. Okke Sikko te Velde (born 12 August 1966 in Haarlemmermeer) is a Dutch former basketball player. He played several Dutch and Belgian teams, as well for the Netherlands national team. From 1984 to 1997, te Velde played for Canadians. From 1987 to 1993, he played six seasons with Den Helder and won four Eredivisie titles. In the 1993–94 season, he trained with Okapi Aalstar but was unable to play as the team had to await the Bosman ruling. From 1994, he played two season with Goba Gorinchem. Richard van Poelgeest (born 23 March 1966) is a Dutch retired basketball player. He played for several clubs in the Netherlands and Belgium in his career. He was also a member of the Netherlands national basketball team. Career Van Poelgeest started his professional career in 1984 with Elmex Leiden in the Eredivisie, the highest league in the Netherlands. Van Poelgeest played college basketball in the United States for the Nebraska Cornhuskers starting from 1986. His career high was 19 points against Iowa State on 26 February 1988. Gundars Vētra (born May 22, 1967) is a Latvian former professional basketball player and a current coach. He most recently served as a head coach of Spartak St. Petersburg. Standing at , he played at the shooting guard and small forward positions. He was the first Latvian to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played one season for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 1992–1993. Coaching career After finishing his playing career, Vētra became a coach. Šarūnas Marčiulionis
Raimondas Šarūnas Marčiulionis () (born June 13, 1964) is a Lithuanian retired professional basketball player. Widely considered one of the greatest international players, he was one of the first Europeans to become a regular in the National Basketball Association (NBA). On August 8, 2014, Marčiulionis was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and became a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2015. In the 1988 Summer Olympics, together with teammate Arvydas Sabonis, Marčiulionis led the senior USSR national team to the gold medal. With the senior Lithuanian national team, he won two Summer Olympics bronze medals, in 1992 and 1996.
