The 1988 Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts at the Palais des Sports de Gerland in Lyon, France, and was part of the 1988 Nabisco Grand Prix. It was the second edition of the tournament and was held from 8 February through 15 February 1988. Unseeded qualifier Yahiya Doumbia won the singles title. Finals Singles Yahiya Doumbia defeated Todd Nelson 6–4, 3–6, 6–3 * It was Doumbia's only title of the year and the 1st of his career. Grand Prix Tennis Circuit
The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. It is one of the fastest court types, second only to grass courts. The use of carpet courts in ATP Tour competitions ended in 2009. Palais des Sports de Gerland is an indoor sporting arena located in Lyon, France. The seating capacity of the arena is 5,910 people. History It was the venue of the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon tournament. The arena was the regular home venue of ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne for European Champions cup games in the late 1970s and early 1980s, for which it had a maximum capacity for 10,000 spectators. The arena also hosted the 1968 European Champions cup final in basketball, in which Real Madrid defeated Spartak Brno 98-95 in front of 8,000 spectators. Brad Drewett (19 July 1958 – 3 May 2013) was an Australian tennis player and ATP official. He was the 1975 and 1977 Australian Open junior champion and the youngest player at age 17 to win the title since Ken Rosewall and John Newcombe. He was also the third-youngest Australian Open quarterfinalist in his first Grand Slam appearance, at 17 years 5 months in 1975, behind Boris Becker, 17 years 4 days in 1984 and Goran Ivanišević, 17 years 4 months in 1989. Michael Mortensen (born 12 March 1961) is a former professional tennis player from Denmark. Mortensen achieved a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 34 in 1988 and a career-high singles ranking of world No. 301 in 1984. He won five ATP doubles titles.
