1988 DFB-Supercup
The 1988 DFB-Supercup was the second DFB-Supercup, an annual football match contested by the winners of the previous season's Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal competitions. The match was played at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt, and contested by league champions Werder Bremen and cup winners Eintracht Frankfurt. Bremen won the match 2–0 for their first title. Manfred Burgsmüller
Manfred "Manni" Burgsmüller (22 December 1949 – 18 May 2019) was a German professional footballer who played mainly as a striker; he also occasionally operated as a midfielder. He appeared in 447 Bundesliga games over the course of 17 seasons, mainly for Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen, scoring 213 goals. After retiring professionally in his 40s, he played as a kicker in American football. Football career During his early career, Burgsmüller played in two different spells for local Rot-Weiss Essen and Bayer Uerdingen alike. In his first stint with the latter club, in the regional leagues, he scored 29 goals in two separate seasons, followed by 22. Otto Rehhagel
Otto Rehhagel (; born 9 August 1938) is a German former football coach and player. Rehhagel is one of only two people who, as player and manager combined, has participated in over 1,000 Bundesliga matches (the other being Jupp Heynckes). In the Bundesliga, he holds the records for the most victories (387), most draws (205), most losses (228), and his teams have scored the most goals (1,473) and conceded more (1,142) than any other. He served as the trainer of Werder Bremen between 1981 and 1995 and won twice the Bundesliga and in 1992 the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup with them. Norbert Meier
Norbert Meier (born 20 September 1958) is a German former football player, who played as a midfielder, and manager who last managed KFC Uerdingen. Playing career Meier's career as a player was spent mostly at SV Werder Bremen where he played first team football from 1980–1990. During this time he also made 16 appearances for West Germany in midfield scoring twice. Meier ended his playing days at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he played two and a half years. Coaching career Borussia Mönchengladbach Meier started his coaching career by taking over the reserve side of Borussia Mönchengladbach on 1 July 1996. Meier coached them until 30 November 1997. Frank Ordenewitz
Frank Ordenewitz (born 25 March 1965) is a German former professional footballer who played as a forward. Club career Ordenewitz scored 68 goals in 272 Bundesliga matches. In a league match against 1. FC Köln on 7 May 1988 the Werder Bremen player admitted to a handball in the penalty area to the referee. Köln went on to win the match 2–0. For his sportsmanship he won the FIFA Fair Play Award that season. Three seasons later, now playing for 1. FC Köln, Ordenewitz received a yellow card against MSV Duisburg in the DFB-Pokal semi-final on 6 May 1991 (final score: 3–0 for Köln). That would have blocked him from playing in the final against his former club, Werder Bremen, and so his coach, Erich Rutemöller, advised him to get himself sent off, since this would allow him to instead serve his suspension in their next Bundesliga game. Frank Neubarth
Frank Neubarth (born 29 July 1962) is a German football manager and former player who spent his whole career with SV Werder Bremen and has since managed FC Schalke 04, Holstein Kiel and FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Playing career Neubarth was born in Hamburg. A forward, he played for Werder Bremen from 1982 until 1996 and scored 97 goals in 317 Bundesliga matches. He also scored 25 goals in the DFB-Pokal and 13 goals in European competitions. He scored at least once every season, except the 1986–87 campaign when he was injured mostly and played just five matches. The most goals he ever scored in a single season was 20 during the 1985–86 season in which Bremen finished in third place. Günter Hermann
Günter Hermann (born 5 December 1960) is a German former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder, mainly with Werder Bremen. He was also part of the West Germany national team that was crowned World champion in 1990. Club career During nearly ten professional seasons, Hermann played with SV Werder Bremen. He made his Bundesliga debut on 11 December 1982, in a 2–1 win at VfL Bochum, but it would be only his only appearance of the season, and he would also amass a single one in the following. After a slow start, Hermann became a very important defensive member, often partnering legendary Miroslav Votava in central midfield. The team captain of an association football team, sometimes known as the skipper, is a team member chosen to be the on-pitch leader of the team; they are often one of the older or more experienced members of the squad, or a player that can heavily influence a game or has good leadership qualities. Miroslav Votava
Miroslav "Mirko" Votava (born 25 April 1956) is a German retired footballer and manager. A defensive midfielder of stamina and tactical awareness, he played 546 matches in the Bundesliga (fourth in the all-time list at the time of his retirement), retiring at the age of 41. Most of his professional career was spent in with Werder Bremen, with which he won a total of five titles – he also played eight years with Borussia Dortmund and spent three seasons outside German football with Atlético Madrid. Thomas Schaaf
Thomas Schaaf (born 30 April 1961) is a German professional football manager, who last managed Werder Bremen and former player who played as a defender currently assistant coach of Laos national football team. A ' one-club man', Schaaf spent his entire playing career with Bundesliga club Werder Bremen. He started coaching the team in 1999 and stepped down in 2013, being one of the longest-serving coaches in the Bundesliga. Playing career Born in Mannheim, Schaaf arrived at Werder Bremen's youth academy in 1972, turning professional six years later. Jonny Otten
Jonny Otten (born 31 January 1961) is a German retired professional footballer who played mostly as a left back. Club career Born in Hagen im Bremischen, Lower Saxony, Otten played 13 years as a professional at SV Werder Bremen, making his Bundesliga debut at the age of 18 and never losing his starting position again (except through injury) until the end of 1990. He totalled 308 top division matches, scoring his only goal on 26 November 1983 in an 8–1 home routing of Kickers Offenbach; in the 1987–88 UEFA Cup, he took the pitch in the 66th minute of a match at Spartak Moscow (after a 4–1 loss in the Soviet Union), and helped turn things around with a tough approach, for a final 6–2 home win. Michael Kutzop
Michael Kutzop (born 24 March 1955) is a German former professional footballer who played as a defender. He spent seven seasons in the Bundesliga with Kickers Offenbach and SV Werder Bremen. Kutzop took arguably the most famous penalty kick in the history of Bundesliga. On the penultimate game day of the 1985–86 season Kutzop's league-leading SV Werder Bremen were playing second-placed Bayern Munich. Werder's victory in that game would guarantee them the title. With the score of 0–0 Kutzop took the penalty kick in the 88th minute and hit the right goalpost. The game ended 0–0. On the last game day Bayern Munich beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 6–0, Werder lost 2–1 to VfB Stuttgart (the team they beat 6–0 earlier in the season) and Bayern took the title on goal difference.
