1987–88 Cypriot Third Division
The 1987–88 Cypriot Third Division was the 17th season of the Cypriot third-level football league. Digenis Akritas Morphou FC won their 1st title. Format Fourteen teams participated in the 1987–88 Cypriot Third Division. All teams played against each other twice, once at their home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season crowned champions. The first two teams were promoted to 1988–89 Cypriot Second Division. The last three teams were relegated to the 1988–89 Cypriot Fourth Division. Point system Teams received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. Cypriot Third Division
The Cypriot Third Division (Greek: Πρωτάθλημα Γ΄ Κατηγορίας) is the third tier football league competition in Cyprus, run by the Cyprus Football Association. Each year, the top finishing teams of the league are promoted to the Cypriot Second Division, and the lowest finishing teams are relegated to the STOK Elite Division. History The Cypriot Third Division was held for the first time in the 1970–71 season as the third level of the Cypriot football. All the teams played against each other twice, once at their home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season crowned champions. This is the league's current format until present time. The only season when the championship not held was during the 1974–75 season. 1987–88 Cypriot Cup
The 1987–88 Cypriot Cup was the 46th edition of the Cypriot Cup. A total of 65 clubs entered the competition. It began on 7 November 1987 with the first preliminary round and concluded on 26 June 1988 with the final which was held at Tsirion Stadium. Omonia won their 8th Cypriot Cup trophy after beating AEL 2–1 in the final. Format In the 1987–88 Cypriot Cup, participated all the teams of the Cypriot First Division, the Cypriot Second Division, the Cypriot Third Division and 20 of the 42 teams of the Cypriot Fourth Division. The competition consisted of seven knock-out rounds. In the first preliminary round each tie was played as a single leg and was held at the home ground of the one of the two teams, according to the draw results. Each tie winner was qualifying to the next round. If a match was drawn, extra time was following. If extra time was drawn, the winner was decided by penalty shoot-out. Format Sixteen teams participated in the 1987–88 Cypriot First Division. All teams played against each other twice, once at their home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season crowned champions. The last three teams were relegated to the 1988–89 Cypriot Second Division. The champions ensured their participation in the 1988–89 European Cup and the runners-up in the 1988–89 UEFA Cup. ''I Simerini'' (English: The Daily) is a centre-right Greek language independently owned newspaper published in Cyprus since 1976. It is one of the largest newspapers on the island with a daily circulation of around 9,000 copies. Other daily Greek language newspapers (2013) published in Cyprus are ''Haravgi'', ''Phileleftheros'', and '' Politis''. ''O Phileleftheros'' ( el, Ὁ Φιλελεύθερος, meaning "The Liberal") is the largest newspaper (by circulation) in Cyprus, with about 26,000 copies daily (2002). Established in 1955, it is also the oldest Greek-language daily newspaper in circulation on the island. Other daily newspapers published in Cyprus include '' Politis,'' ''Simerini'', ''Haravgi'', and ''Alithia''. Neos Aionas Trikomou ( el, Νέος Αιώνας Τρικώμου, "New Century Trikomou") was a Cypriot football club based in Trikomo. Founded in 1900, was playing sometimes in Second and sometimes in the Third and Fourth Division. After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and occupation of the city of Trikomo in 1974, the team was displaced to the southern part of the island, in Limassol.
