1986–87 Cypriot Third Division
The 1986–87 Cypriot Third Division was the 16th season of the Cypriot third-level football league. Elpida Xylofagou won their 1st title. Format Fourteen teams participated in the 1986–87 Cypriot Third Division. All teams played against each other twice, once at their home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season crowned champions. The first two teams were promoted to 1987–88 Cypriot Second Division. The last three teams were relegated to the 1987–88 Cypriot Fourth Division. Point system Teams received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. Cypriot Third Division
The Cypriot Third Division (Greek: Πρωτάθλημα Γ΄ Κατηγορίας) is the third tier football league competition in Cyprus, run by the Cyprus Football Association. Each year, the top finishing teams of the league are promoted to the Cypriot Second Division, and the lowest finishing teams are relegated to the STOK Elite Division. History The Cypriot Third Division was held for the first time in the 1970–71 season as the third level of the Cypriot football. All the teams played against each other twice, once at their home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season crowned champions. This is the league's current format until present time. The only season when the championship not held was during the 1974–75 season. 1986–87 Cypriot Cup
The 1986–87 Cypriot Cup was the 45th edition of the Cypriot Cup. A total of 57 clubs entered the competition. It began on 19 November 1986 with the first preliminary round and concluded on 20 June 1987 with the final which was held at Tsirion Stadium. AEL Limassol won their 5th Cypriot Cup trophy after beating Apollon 1–0 in the final. Format In the 1986–87 Cypriot Cup, participated all the teams of the Cypriot First Division, the Cypriot Second Division, the Cypriot Third Division and 12 of the 46 teams of the Cypriot Fourth Division. The competition consisted of seven knock-out rounds. In the preliminary rounds each tie was played as a single leg and was held at the home ground of the one of the two teams, according to the draw results. The 1986–87 Cypriot First Division was the 48th season of the Cypriot top-level football league. Omonia won their 15th title. Format Sixteen teams participated in the 1986–87 Cypriot First Division. All teams played against each other twice, once at their home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season crowned champions. The last two teams were relegated to the 1987–88 Cypriot Second Division. The champions ensured their participation in the 1987–88 European Cup and the runners-up in the 1987–88 UEFA Cup. ''O Phileleftheros'' ( el, Ὁ Φιλελεύθερος, meaning "The Liberal") is the largest newspaper (by circulation) in Cyprus, with about 26,000 copies daily (2002). Established in 1955, it is also the oldest Greek-language daily newspaper in circulation on the island.
