1985–86 FIS Cross-Country World Cup
The 1985–86 FIS Cross-Country World Cup was the 5th official World Cup season in cross-country skiing for men and ladies. The World Cup began in Labrador City, Canada, on 7 December 1985 and finished in Oslo, Norway, on 15 March 1986. Gunde Svan of Sweden won the overall men's cup, and Marjo Matikainen of Finland won the women's. Before the season began, after several years of disagreements between athletes and federations concerning what styles of skiing should be allowed, it was decided that cross-country skiing should have two disciplines: classical and freestyle. The initiative to this idea was made by the Swedish skier Thomas Wassberg. Ove Aunli
Ove Robert Aunli (born 12 March 1956 in Hemne) is a Norwegian former cross-country skier. He took the Olympic bronze medal in 1980 Lake Placid when Thomas Wassberg beat Juha Mieto by one-hundredth of a second for the gold medal, and won a silver medal as part of Norway's 4 × 10 km relay team. Aunli found his biggest success at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, winning six medals. This included two golds (4 × 10 km: 1982, 1985), one silver (30 km: 1985), and three bronzes (4 × 10 km: 1978, 1987; 50 km: 1985). Aunli represented the clubs Kyrksæterøra IL and Strindheim IL. Falun
Falun () is a city and the seat of Falun Municipality in Dalarna County, Sweden, with 37,291 inhabitants in 2010. It is also the capital of Dalarna County. Falun forms, together with Borlänge, a metropolitan area with just over 100,000 inhabitants. Falun was originally famous for its copper mine, and is today an important service and industrial city even though the mine is closed (since 1992). Faluån is a river, flowing through the city, separating it into two sides. Falu copper mine is located on one of the sides which during many centuries was one of Sweden's main business. This side of the river was usually called "the mining side", where not many plants grew due to the toxic smoke which contaminated the soil. On the other side of the river, where the smoke did not reach, set many large villas, which made this side to be called "the delightful side". Giorgio Vanzetta
Giorgio Vanzetta (born 9 October 1959 in Cavalese) is an Italian former cross-country skier who competed from 1980 to 2002. His best known victory was part of the 4 × 10 km relay team that upset Norway at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. He also won three medals at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville with a silver in the 4 × 10 km relay and bronzes in the 10 km + 15 km combined pursuit and 50 km. Vanzetta also won two silver medals in the 4 × 10 km relay (1985, 1993) at the Nordic skiing World Championships. His sister, Bice, also competed in cross-country skiing from 1986 to 1994. Lahti
Lahti (; sv, Lahtis) is a city and municipality in Finland. It is the capital of the region of Päijänne Tavastia (Päijät-Häme) and its growing region is one of the main economic hubs of Finland. Yuriy Ilyich Burlakov (russian: Юрий Ильич Бурлаков); born 1960) is a former Soviet/Russian cross-country skier who competed from 1982 to 1997. He won two medals at the 1982 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a gold in the 4 × 10 km relay (Tied with Norway) and a silver in the 50 km. Kavgolovo
Toksovo (russian: То́ксово; fi, Toksova) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Vsevolozhsky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located to the north of St. Petersburg on the Karelian Isthmus. It is served by two neighboring stations of the Saint Petersburg-Khiytola railroad: Toksovo (constructed in 1917) and Kavgolovo (1929) (which serves a popular ski resort). Maurilio De Zolt
Maurilio De Zolt (born 29 September 1950 in San Pietro di Cadore, Province of Belluno) is an Italian cross-country skier who competed internationally from 1977 to 1997. His best known victory was part of the 4 × 10 km relay team that upset Norway at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, when he was 43 years old. He also won two silver medals in the Winter Olympics at 50 km (1988, 1992). Vladimir Sakhnov
Vladimir Nikolaevich Sakhnov (russian: Владимир Николаевич Сахнов; born 25 April 1961 in Kamenka, Tselinograd Oblast, Kazakh SSR) is a former Soviet cross-country skier who raced from 1983 to 1989. Sakhnov trained at Armed Forces sports society in Alma-Ata. He earned a silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary; his best individual Winter Olympics finish was a fourth in the 30 km event in 1984. Sakhnov also won a silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1987 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. His best individual finish at the Nordic skiing World Championships was a sixth place in the 50 km event at those same championships. Oberstdorf ( Low Alemannic: ''Oberschdorf'') is a municipality and skiing and hiking town in Germany, located in the Allgäu region of the Bavarian Alps. Vegard Ulvang
Vegard Ulvang (born 10 October 1963, in Kirkenes) is a Norwegian cross-country skier who won three Olympic gold medals, two silver, and one bronze. He has retired from international and Olympic competition. At the opening ceremony of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games, he took the ceremonial Olympic Oath on part of all the athletes. In addition to his Olympic achievements, he received the Holmenkollen medal in 1991 (shared with Trond Einar Elden, Ernst Vettori, and Jens Weißflog), and won the World Cup in 1990. Torgny Mogren
Torgny Mogren (born 26 July 1963) is a Swedish former cross-country skier who competed from 1984 to 1998. He won the gold medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. His best individual finish was a fifth in the combined pursuit at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville. Mogren's biggest successes occurred at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships where he earned nine medals. This included four golds (4 × 10 km relay: 1987, 1989; 50 km: 1991, 1993), three silvers (15 km, 30 km: both 1989; 4 × 10 km relay: 1991), and two bronzes (50 km: 1987, 10 km: 1991).
