1985 Yukon General Election
The 1985 Yukon general election was held on May 13, 1985 to elect members of the 26th Legislative Assembly of the territory of Yukon, Canada. It was the first Yukon general election with live results coverage on television, and was suspenseful as telecommunications problems prevented the results of the Old Crow riding from being known outside of that community. It was won by the New Democratic Party. Yukon Legislative Assembly
The Yukon Legislative Assembly (french: Assemblée législative du Yukon) is the legislative assembly for Yukon, Canada. Unique among Canada's Provinces and territories of Canada, three territories, the Yukon Legislative Assembly is the only territorial legislature which is organized along political party lines. In contrast, in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, their legislative assemblies are elected on a Non-partisan democracy, non-partisan basis and operate on a consensus government model. Faro (electoral District)
Faro was an electoral district that returned a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada between 1978 and 2002. It was created out of the riding of Pelly River and encompassed the community of Faro. It was situated on the traditional territory of the Ross River Dena Council of the Kaska Dena. The riding was dissolved in 2002 and amalgamated into the new riding of Pelly-Nisutlin, which includes the communities of Faro, Teslin, Ross River, and Little Salmon. Kluane
Kluane is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Canadian territory of Yukon. It is named after Kluane National Park, which is within the riding. It is one of the Yukon's eight rural districts. Kluane represents all Yukon communities and residents along the Alaska Highway west of Whitehorse and south to Alaska. This includes the communities of Haines Junction, Burwash Landing, Destruction Bay, Beaver Creek, and Mendenhall, as well as parts of the Ibex and Macpherson-Grizzly valleys. He served as chief of the Teslin Tlingit Council from 1970 to 1984, and represented Campbell (electoral district), Campbell in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1985 to 1992 as a Yukon New Democratic Party, NDP member. Vuntut Gwitchin is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon in Canada. It is one of the Yukon's eight rural seats. The electoral district was known as Old Crow, named after the community it encompasses, before 1992. In the 1974 election and the 1970 election, the riding was part of Ogilvie and Dawson, respectively. It is the least populated electoral district in any provincial or territorial legislature in Canada, with fewer than 200 total ballots cast in any territorial election to date. Kathie Nukon
Kathie Emma Nukon (born January 8, 1947, in Old Crow, Yukon) is a Canadian former politician, who represented the electoral district of Old Crow in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 1985. She was a member of the Yukon Progressive Conservative Party. The daughter of a trading post owner in Old Crow, Nukon studied in Whitehorse to be a nursing assistant, but worked mainly as an office manager and bookkeeper in her father's store until her election to the legislature.
