Yukon Liberal Party
The Yukon Liberal Party (french: Parti libéral du Yukon) is a political party in the territory of Yukon, Canada. The party is not organizationally linked to the federal Liberal Party of Canada in any official manner. Sandy Silver, MLA for Klondike, is the Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and Premier of Yukon. History After twenty years as a minor party, the Yukon Liberal Party won the 2000 general election and formed a government under Premier Pat Duncan. The government, however, was reduced to minority government status. Duncan called a snap election for November 2002 in the hope of regaining her government's majority. The party was almost completely wiped out, however, by the Yukon Party. Duncan won the Liberals' sole seat in the Yukon Party's landslide. The Liberal Party remained in opposition until the 2016 general election where the party went from third place in the legislature to majority government with its leader, Sandy Silver, becoming Premier. Sandy Silver
Sidney Alexander "Sandy" Silver (born October 15, 1969) is a Canadian politician, the ninth and current premier of Yukon since 2016. He was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the 2011 election, and was re-elected in 2016. He represents the electoral district of Klondike and is Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party. Political career 33rd Assembly Silver was first elected on October 11, 2011, defeating incumbent Yukon Party Cabinet minister Steve Nordick in the rural Yukon riding of Klondike. Ron Veale
Ronald Stuart Veale is a Canadian jurist and former politician, who represented the electoral district of Riverdale South in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1981 to 1982. He was a member of the Yukon Liberal Party, and the party's leader from 1981 to 1984. Veale assumed the leadership of the Yukon Liberal Party in 1981 after the resignation of Iain MacKay, also running in and winning a by-election on March 9, 1981, to succeed MacKay as MLA for Riverdale South. Under his leadership, however, the party was entirely shut out of the legislature in the 1982 election. Veale resigned the party leadership in 1984, and was succeeded by Roger Coles. He subsequently returned to his law practice. He was later appointed to the Supreme Court of Yukon, of which he was the Chief Justice until his retirement in July 2020. Arthur Mitchell (Yukon Politician)
Arthur Mitchell is a Canadian politician, who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Yukon and the Leader of the Official Opposition from 2006 to 2011. He is a former real estate agent and an assistant to John Ostashek, the Yukon Party Government Leader (Premier) from 1992 to 1996. Mitchell was elected leader in June 2005 in a leadership race against Pat Duncan, the Yukon's first Liberal premier, and remained leader until his defeat in the 2011 Yukon election. Personal life Mitchell is originally from the community of New Rochelle, New York. He is the brother of television journalist Andrea Mitchell who is married to Alan Greenspan. 2006 Yukon General Election
The 2006 Yukon general election was held on October 10, 2006, in Yukon, Canada, to elect members of the 32nd Yukon Legislative Assembly. Pat Duncan
Pat Duncan (born April 8, 1960) is a Canadian politician from Yukon. Duncan served as leader of the Yukon Liberal Party from 1998 to 2005 and as the sixth premier of Yukon from 2000 until 2002. Duncan was the first Liberal premier of the Yukon and the first female premier in the Yukon, the second woman in Canadian history to win the premiership of a province or territory through a general election, the first to do so by defeating an incumbent premier, and the first to do so by defeating a male opponent.
