The 1984 Borden Classic was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts in Tokyo, Japan that was part of the 1984 Virginia Slims World Championship Series. The tournament was held from 1 October through 7 October 1984. Third-seeded Etsuko Inoue won the singles title. Mercedes Paz
Mercedes María Paz (; born 27 June 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. She won three singles titles on the WTA Tour and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 28 in April 1991. Her best Grand Slam result was the fourth round at the 1986 French Open and the 1990 French Open. Paz unexpectedly defeated defending champion Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the second round of the 1990 French Open. Later that year, at the Virginia Slims of Worcester, Paz also defeated Sánchez Vicario in the round of 16. Ronni Reis
Ronni Reis (sometimes spelled Ronnie Reis; also Ronni Reis-Bernstein) (born May 10, 1966) is an American former tennis player. Reis won three gold medals at the 1985 Maccabiah Games in Israel, the doubles bronze medal at the 1986 Goodwill Games, and the doubles gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games. Reis played for the Miami Hurricanes at the University of Miami, where she won the NCAA doubles tournament in 1986 and was named the NCAA Senior Player of the Year in 1988. Hard Court
A hardcourt (or hard court) is a surface or floor on which a sport is played, most usually in reference to tennis courts. It is typically made of rigid materials such as asphalt or concrete, and covered with acrylic resins to seal the surface and mark the playing lines, while providing some cushioning. 1984 Virginia Slims World Championship Series
The 1984 Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the 14th season since the foundation of the Women's Tennis Association. It commenced in March 1984, and concluded in March 1985 after events. The Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the elite tour for professional women's tennis organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). It was held in place of the WTA Tour from 1983 until 1987 and featured tournaments that had previously been part of the ''Toyota Series'' and the ''Avon Series''. It included the four Grand Slam tournaments and a series of other events. ITF tournaments were not part of the tour, although they awarded points for the WTA World Ranking. Beth Herr
Beth Herr (born 28 May 1964) is an American tennis player from Centerville, Ohio, who won four Junior Grand Slam titles, the NCAA singles and team titles and one professional tennis tournament. In her home state of Ohio, she was a two-time high school singles state champion (1980-1981). Her NCAA singles title came in 1983. College Herr became the number-one junior tennis player in the world at the age of 16. Upon graduation from Centerville High School, she was the No. 1 college recruit in 1982 and played for the University of Southern California, where she won the NCAA singles title and team title in her first year. Emilse Raponi Longo (born December 19, 1957) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. Biography Tennis career Longo began competing on the professional tour in 1978, as Emilse Raponi. She had early success at her home tournament, the 1978 River Plate Championships, making it through to a WTA Tour final in her first season. En route she upset top seed Regina Maršíková, but was unable to get past Caroline Stoll in the final. In 1979 she made her debut for Argentina's Fed Cup team and went on to feature in a total of 11 ties for her native country.
