1983 Virginia Slims World Championship Series
The 1983 Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the 13th season since the foundation of the Women's Tennis Association. It commenced on January 3, 1983, and concluded on March 4, 1984, after 64 events. The Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the elite tour for professional women's tennis organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). It was held in place of the WTA Tour from 1983 until 1987 and featured tournaments that had previously been part of the ''Toyota Series'' and the ''Avon Series''. The circuit consisted of 48 tournaments in nine countries, including the four Grand Slam tournaments, and culminated in the season-ending Virginia Slims Championships played in February 1984. A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Pascale Paradis-Mangon (born 24 April 1966) is a former professional tennis player from France. Paradis was the World Junior Champion in women's singles in 1983. Although she failed to reach the heights predicted for her at that time, she did reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 1988, defeating Manuela Maleeva, Nathalie Herreman, Robin White and Anne Minter before falling to Steffi Graf. Chris Newton (tennis)
Christine Newton (born 13 February 1956) is a New Zealand former professional tennis player. While competing on tour in the 1970s and 1980s, Newton featured in the main draws of four grand slam tournaments, which included a doubles semi-final appearances at the 1979 Australian Open (with Jenny Walker). She played in the singles second round of the 1976 Wimbledon Championships, losing to Mona Guerrant. Newton won a doubles title at the Auckland Open in 1978 and was the singles runner-up in 1981. Pam Whytcross (born 25 November 1953) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. In a nine-year professional career beginning in 1977, Whytcross won 3 doubles titles and was a losing finalist with Naoko Satō at the 1978 Australian Open. In singles, Whytcross' best Grand Slam results were at Melbourne and Roland Garros in 1977, where she reached the third round. Whytcross reached a career-high singles ranking of 150 and number 141 in doubles. Career Although Whytcross did not turn professional until 1977, she began competing in tournaments in 1973 and played in her first doubles final in Sydney in January 1974. Petra Huber (born 15 February 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Biography Junior career Before turning professional, Huber competed with success on the junior circuit. In 1982 she partnered with Judith Polz to make the girls' doubles semi-finals at the Australian Open and quarter-finals at the French Open. She was a semi-finalist in the girls' singles event at the 1983 French Open. Professional tennis Huber made her first WTA Tour final at the 1984 Miami Classic, which she lost to Laura Arraya. The WTA Austrian Open is a WTA Tour affiliated women's tennis tournament held off and on from 1968. In the Open Era, seven locations hosted the event: Pörtschach in 1968 and 1999; Kitzbühel from 1969 to 1983 and from 1990 to 1993; Vienna in 1979 and from 2001 to 2004; Bregenz from 1985 to 1986; Maria Lankowitz from 1994 to 1998, Klagenfurt in 2000 and Bad Gastein from 2007 to 2015 where it took place as Nürnberger Gastein Ladies. The tournament which is held on outdoor clay courts was not contested in 1984, 1987 to 1989 and from 2005 to 2006.
