1981 European Indoor Championships In Athletics
The 1981 European Athletics Indoor Championships were held in Grenoble, a city in France, between 21–22 February 1981. It was the second time the championships were held in the city. Aleksandr Konstantinovich Krupskiy (russian: Александр Константинович Крупский; born 4 January 1960) is a retired pole vaulter who represented the USSR and later Russia. He won the 1982 European Athletics Championships as well as three medals at the European Indoor Championships The European Indoor Championships was a men's tennis tournament played in Berlin, Germany. Thierry Vigneron
Thierry Vigneron (born 9 March 1960 in Gennevilliers, Hauts-de-Seine) is a retired French pole vaulter. In the 1980s, he was among the world's leading pole vaulters. He broke the world record in the event four times and was the last man to hold the world record (for only a few minutes in August 1984) before Sergey Bubka, who would hold on to it almost 30 years until February 2014. Biography Vigneron burst onto the world stage by unexpectedly beating the 5.72 m outdoor world record of Poland's Władysław Kozakiewicz with a jump of 5.75 m on 1 June 1980. Vigneron equaled his own outdoor world record of 5.75 m on 29 June 1980. Although Vigneron lost his outdoor world record to another Frenchman, Philippe Houvion, on 17 July 1980, he was one of the favorites at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Dietmar Mögenburg
Dietmar Mögenburg (, ; born 15 August 1961) is a (West) German former high jumper who won gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and at the 1982 European Championships in Athens. Career On 26 May 1980, at the age of 18, Mögenburg jumped 2.35 m which tied the world outdoor record set by Jacek Wszoła of Poland. At the time, this mark also established a new world outdoor junior record. He reached his outdoor peak on 10 June 1984 when he cleared 2.36 m in Eberstadt, in a competition won by Zhu Jianhua with a world record of 2.39 m. Carlo Thränhardt
Carlo Thränhardt (, ; born 5 July 1957) is a retired German high jumper. He excelled at indoor competitions, setting the world indoor record on three occasions between 1984 and 1988. His best mark of 2.42 meters ranks him second on the indoor all-time list one-centimetre behind world record holder Javier Sotomayor of Cuba. The only superior outdoor performances are Sotomayor's world record of 2.45, and Mutaz Essa Barshim's clearance of 2.43 in 2014. Like all modern high jumpers, Thränhardt used the Fosbury Flop style, but of the 16 men in history to have cleared 2.40 meters (7 ft 10 1/2in) or higher, he was only the second to do so jumping off his right leg. The first was Igor Paklin. At the European Indoor Championships, he won a gold medal in 1983 and four silver medals (1981,84, 86,87). Hartwig Gauder
Hartwig Gauder (10 November 1954 – 22 April 2020) was a German race walker who won a gold medal in the Men's 50 kilometres walk at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Born in West Germany, his family moved to East Germany in 1960 when they inherited property at Ilmenau. Gauder thus competed for East Germany. In 1996 Gauder started suffering from a virus infection of his heart. After living with an artificial heart for several months, he received a heart transplant. He subsequently took part in the New York Marathon several times. Being classified as a disabled participant due to his transplant, he was once disqualified for being too fast as there was a minimum time, which he underran. His recovery from almost dying to returning into a normal life was covered in a documentary shown on German documentary channel Phoenix.
