1979 ICC Trophy
The 1979 ICC Trophy was a limited overs cricket tournament held in England between 22 May and 21 June 1979. It was the inaugural ICC Trophy tournament to be staged, with matches between the 15 participating teams played over 60 overs a side and with white clothing and red balls. All matches were played in the Midlands. The tournament served as the Cricket World Cup qualification process – the two finalists, Sri Lanka and Canada, qualified to take part in the 1979 World Cup. The World Cup began on 9 June, just three days after Sri Lanka and Canada qualified for it by winning their ICC Trophy semi-finals. The ICC Trophy final was held on 21 June at Worcestershire's ground at New Road, two days before the World Cup final. Sri Lanka won the first ICC Trophy defeating Canada in the final. Run Rate
In cricket, the run rate (RR), or runs per over (RPO), is the average number of runs a batting side scores per over. It includes all runs made by the batting side in the innings to that point of the game, both the runs scored by the batsmen and extras conceded by the bowling team. Values What counts as a good run rate depends on the nature of the pitch, the type of match and the level of the game. A Test match held over five days typically has a lower run rate than a limited-overs game, because batsmen adopt a more cautious approach. In recent years, the average Test run rate has been between 3 and 3.5 runs per over, sometimes even lower whereas in limited overs cricket the batsmen must adopt a more gung-ho approach in order to achieve the necessary score to win. Narendra Thakker
Narendra P. Thakker (born 1945) is a former Kenyan cricketer who played internationally for East Africa, including at the 1979 and 1982 ICC Trophies. He played as a wicket-keeper. A regular player for Kenya in regional tournaments, Thakker first played for East Africa in 1972, when he toured England and played against several county teams. He played his one and only first-class match in January 1974, against a Marylebone Cricket Club team that was returning the tour. In the match, played at Nairobi's Gymkhana Club Ground, he opened the batting with Jagoo Shah in both innings, scoring one run in the first and 22 in the second. At the 1979 ICC Trophy in England, Thakker shared East Africa's captaincy with Charanjive Sharma, with each player captaining the team in two of its four matches. The Papua New Guinea national cricket team, nicknamed the Barramundis, is the team that represents the country of Papua New Guinea in international cricket.
