1978 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Martina Navratilova defeated Chris Evert in the final, 2–6, 6–4, 7–5 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1978 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first major singles title, and the first of an eventual 18 major singles titles and a record nine Wimbledon singles titles. Virginia Wade was the defending champion, but was defeated in the semifinals by Evert. This was the first time Wimbledon seeded 16 players for the ladies' championship, increasing the number from 12 the previous year. There have been at least 16 seeds in every Championship since. Martina Navratilova ( cs, Martina Navrátilová ; ; born October 18, 1956) is a Czech–American, former professional tennis player. Widely considered among the greatest tennis players of all time, Navratilova won 18 major singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 major titles, the most in the Open Era. Marita Redondo
Marita Redondo (born February 19, 1956) is an American former tennis player who was active during the 1970s and early 1980s. Her best singles performance at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the fourth round at the 1978 US Open where she lost in three sets to Wendy Turnbull. At both the French Open (1976) and Wimbledon (1978) she reached the third round in the singles, losing to Virginia Ruzici and Ruta Gerulaitis respectively. Mimmi Wikstedt
Marie "Mimmi" Wikstedt (born 30 April 1954) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. Biography Wikstedt, who is known by her nickname "Mimmi", was born in Stockholm. She began competing in the early 1970s and made her debut for the Sweden Fed Cup team in 1973. Most of her Fed Cup matches came in doubles. Her best grand slam performances came on the grass courts at Wimbledon. She made the mixed doubles quarter-finals with Ernie Ewert in 1975, won the Wimbledon Plate in 1976, reached the women's doubles quarter-finals with Jane Stratton in 1977 and made the third round of the singles in 1979. Ann Kiyomura-Hayashi (born August 22, 1955) is a retired American professional tennis player. She is from San Mateo, California. Kiyomura played on the WTA Tour from 1973 to 1984. She played in 11 US Opens, reaching the fourth round in 1978. In 1973, she won the Wimbledon junior singles title, beating Martina Navratilova. Helle Sparre (born 30 June 1956) is a former professional tennis player from Denmark. She competed during her career under her married name Helle Sparre-Viragh. Glynis Coles (born 20 February 1954), also known by her married name Glynis Coles-Bond, is a retired English professional tennis player and former British number 2. Career Coles played professionally between 1970 and 1988, playing both singles and doubles. Sheila McInerney
Sheila McInerney (born February 22, 1958) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography McInerney is originally from Rome, New York and began playing tennis at the age of eight. A former student at the Rome Free Academy, she later moved to Miami to further her tennis and attended Palmetto High School. She received a tennis scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC Trojans) in 1976. As an amateur, McInerney qualified for the main draw of the 1977 US Open and made it through to the third round, where she was beaten in three sets by Billie Jean King.
