Sheila McInerney
Sheila McInerney (born February 22, 1958) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography McInerney is originally from Rome, New York and began playing tennis at the age of eight. A former student at the Rome Free Academy, she later moved to Miami to further her tennis and attended Palmetto High School. She received a tennis scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC Trojans) in 1976. As an amateur, McInerney qualified for the main draw of the 1977 US Open and made it through to the third round, where she was beaten in three sets by Billie Jean King. In 1978 she partnered with USC teammate Barbara Hallquist to a runner-up finish in the doubles at the U.S. Clay Court Championships. By the time she graduated from USC in 1980, she had achieved four All-American selections and was captain of the Trojans in her senior year. 1978 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Martina Navratilova defeated Chris Evert in the final, 2–6, 6–4, 7–5 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1978 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first major singles title, and the first of an eventual 18 major singles titles and a record nine Wimbledon singles titles. Virginia Wade was the defending champion, but was defeated in the semifinals by Evert. This was the first time Wimbledon seeded 16 players for the ladies' championship, increasing the number from 12 the previous year. There have been at least 16 seeds in every Championship since. ''The Indianapolis Star'' (also known as ''IndyStar'') is a morning daily newspaper that began publishing on June 6, 1903, in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Helle Sparre
Helle Sparre (born 30 June 1956) is a former professional tennis player from Denmark. She competed during her career under her married name Helle Sparre-Viragh. Biography Born in Copenhagen, Sparre featured in 13 Federation Cup ties for Denmark in the 1970s, including a quarter-final in 1976. She twice reached the third round of the Wimbledon Championships, in 1977 and 1978. Partnering Helena Anliot, she won the doubles title at the 1978 U.S. Clay Court Championships. Sparre lived in California beginning in 1978 and served as the tennis director and head pro at Scott Valley Swimming and Tennis Club in Mill Valley, CA from 1987-2015 . The 1987 Pan American Games, officially known as the X Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event held in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, on August 7–23, 1987. Over 4,300 athletes from 38 countries in the Americas competed in 30 sports, earning 1,015 medals. Events were held at 23 venues in and around Indianapolis. The official mascot for the games was Amigo, a green parrot. The 1986 Goodwill Games was the inaugural edition of the international multi-sport event created by Ted Turner, which was held from 5 – 20 July 1986. The main stadium was the Central Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. The Games were a response to the Olympic boycotts of the period, which saw the United States refuse to attend the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, and the Soviet Union refusing to attend the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
