The Individual Ice Speedway World Championship is an Ice speedway championship held annually to determine an individual World Champion. History The first Championships were held in 1966. A European Championship was held for the two years preceding the World Championships.The event has been dominated by the Soviet Union/Russia, who have won all but seven of the World Championship titles since 1966. Sweden has won five times, Czechoslovakia twice and Finland once. Medalists In 2021 and 2022 Russian athletes competed as neutral competitors using the designation MFR (Motorcycle Federation of Russia), as the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a ban on Russia competing at World Championships. The ban was implemented by the World Anti-Doping Agency in response to state-sponsored doping program of Russian athletes. 1978 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1978 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 33rd edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. Ole Olsen won his third world crown. The final was sponsored by the Sunday Mirror and was attended by 86,500. Gordon Kennett took silver on the day of his 25th birthday and American Scott Autrey won the bronze medal run-off defeating Dave Jessup and Jerzy Rembas. Dave Jessup was effectively denied a World title when after leading in heat 3 he suffered a bike malfunction and finished last in the heat. He then scored 11 points from his remaining rides which would have been enough to take the crown if he had won heat 3. British Qualification The British qualifying rounds for the World Championship doubled up as qualifying rounds for the Volkswagen/Daily Mirror Grand Prix. Bruce Cribb
Bruce Brian Hoani Cribb (born 27 June 1946) is a former speedway rider from New Zealand, who rode in the United Kingdom for several teams in a career spanning over twenty years. Career Cribb was born in Palmerston North, where he began riding, before joining the Poole Pirates in 1965. In 1969 and 1970, he represented New Zealand in tests with England, and in 1971, he rode for Great Britain in matches with Poland. He won the New Zealand Championship in 1972, and was a member of the New Zealand team that won the World Team Cup in 1979. From the 1970s to 1988, he competed in ice speedway events and rode in two World ice speedway finals in 1978 and 1988. Personal life Since retiring he had a speedway business which closed as he finally finished ice speedway, then worked in engineering (machine shop). Per-Olof "Posa" Serenius (born 9 March 1948) in Hedemora, Sweden, is a Swedish former ice speedway rider. He is notable for winning two World Individual Championship gold medals in ice speedway. Biography Serenius was a fireman by profession. Already an experienced motorcyclist, he began to compete in ice speedway racing in 1976 after witnessing a World Championship ice speedway competition in Berlin. His career racing record includes two World Individual Championship gold medals, three World Team gold medals, 32 World finals, 22 national championships and eight Nordic Championships. He participated in the documentary film ''Icy Riders'' from 2008. In 2016, Serenius was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycle racing achievements.
