Overview Liverpool won the First Division title for the ninth time in the club's history that season and the first under manager Bob Paisley. They won the title on their last game of the season on 4 May, 1976, beating relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3–1 at Molineux. Had they lost, Queens Park Rangers would have been champions, having beaten Leeds United 2–0 at Loftus Road in their last game. Despite that, QPR still managed to finish in their highest ever position of runners-up and qualified for the UEFA Cup. Sheffield United's relegation was confirmed on 27 March after losing 5–0 to Tottenham Hotspur. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season. Loftus Road
Loftus Road is a football stadium in White City, London, England, which is home to Queens Park Rangers. In 1981, it became the first stadium in British professional football to have an artificial pitch of Omniturf installed. This remained in use until 1988, after which a natural grass pitch was reintroduced. Rugby union team London Wasps shared the ground with QPR between 1996 and 2002 and Premier League football club Fulham shared it from 2002 to 2004 while Craven Cottage was closed for reconstruction. Bob Paisley
Robert Paisley OBE (23 January 1919 – 14 February 1996) was an English professional football manager and player who played as a wing-half. He spent almost 50 years with Liverpool and is regarded, due to his achievements with the club, as one of the greatest managers of all time. Reluctantly taking the job in 1974, he built on the foundations laid by his predecessor Bill Shankly. Paisley is the first of three managers to have won the European Cup three times. He is also one of five managers to have won the English top-flight championship as both a player and manager at the same club. Paisley came from a small County Durham mining community and, in his youth, played for Bishop Auckland before he signed for Liverpool in 1939. During the Second World War he served in the British Army, and could not make his Liverpool debut until 1946. They made sure of it on 19 April, with a 0-0 draw at Leicester City and the fact that their title challengers Liverpool lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough. Carlisle United were relegated on 19 April, despite winning 1-0 at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur sent the Cumbrians down.
