1975 Davis Cup Americas Zone
The Americas Zone was one of the three regional zones of the 1975 Davis Cup. 12 teams entered the Americas Zone split across two sub-zones, the North & Central America Zone and the South America Zone. 9 teams played in the preliminary rounds, competing to advance to the main draw and join the remaining 3 teams which advanced to the main draw directly. The winners of each sub-zone main draw then played against each other to determine who moved to the Inter-Zonal Zone to compete against the winners of the Eastern Zone and Europe Zone. South Africa were declared winners of the North & Central America Zone by walkover after Colombia withdrew ahead of the final, while in the South America Zone Chile defeated Brazil in the final. 1975 Davis Cup
The 1975 Davis Cup was the 64th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 55 teams would enter the competition, 32 in the Europe Zone, 12 in the Americas Zone, and 11 in the Eastern Zone. Kenya made its first appearance in the tournament. Chile defeated South Africa in the Americas Inter-Zonal final, Australia defeated New Zealand in the Eastern Zone final, and Sweden and Czechoslovakia were the winners of the two Europe Zones, defeating Spain and France respectively. In the Inter-Zonal Zone, Czechoslovakia defeated Australia and Sweden defeated Chile in the semifinals. Sweden then defeated Czechoslovakia in the final to win their first title and become the sixth nation to win the Davis Cup. The final was held at the Kungliga tennishallen in Stockholm, Sweden on 19–21 December. John Antonas
John Antonas (born 12 September 1951) is a Bahamian former professional tennis player. Born in Nassau, Antonas represented the Caribbean at the 1975 Nations Cup (later World Team Cup) and in the Davis Cup from 1975 to 1982. In 1989 he got the opportunity to compete for the Bahamas Davis Cup team as playing captain of the side, which was debuting in the competition. He stayed on as non playing captain throughout the 1990s. Antonas ranked 258 on the professional tour and played collegiate tennis for the University of Alabama. Stanley Roger Smith (born December 14, 1946) is an American former professional tennis player. Smith is best known to non-tennis players as the namesake of a popular brand of tennis shoes. A world No. 1 player and two-time major singles champion (at the 1971 US Open and 1972 Wimbledon Championships), Smith also paired with Bob Lutz to create one of the most successful doubles teams of all-time. Roberto Chávez
Roberto Chávez is a Mexican former professional tennis player. Chávez reached a career high ranking of 172 in the world while competing on the professional tour in the 1970s. At the 1973 Wimbledon Championships, Chávez came from two sets down to win his first round match against Ionel Sânteiu. His best performance on tour came at Mexico City in 1978, where he beat John Alexander en route to the quarter-finals. Between 1975 and 1979, Chávez was a member of the Mexico Davis Cup team and appeared in a total of seven ties. He won a two singles rubbers, both against Canada's Réjean Genois. Vicente Zarazúa
Vicente Zarazúa (born August 27, 1944) is a Mexican former tennis player. He played during the 1960s and 70s, and his best achievement was winning gold medals at the demonstration and exhibition tennis tournaments at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Vicente Zarazúa was born at Tacubaya (Mexico) in 1944. Both his parents, who moved to Mexico City from Guanajuato, were amateur tennis players and took part in interclub competitions, with his mother, Rosario, also winning the national championships. Both his older brothers, Federico and José María, played amateur tennis at the interclub level. Pierre Lamarche
Pierre Lamarche (born January 2, 1947) is a Canadian former tennis player and coach. Raised in Montreal, Quebec, Lamarche played collegiate tennis in the United States for Mississippi State University and was known for having a fiery on court persona. He made a solitary Davis Cup appearance for Canada in 1974, featuring in the doubles rubber of a tie against Mexico in his home province, which he and Réjean Genois lost to Raúl Ramírez and Vicente Zarazúa. From 1991 to 1996 he served as the team's non playing captain and steered the Canadians into the World Group for the first time. Réjean Genois (born December 30, 1952) is a former professional and Davis Cup tennis player from Quebec City. Genois was the top-ranked Canadian singles player during 1978 and 1979. His career high ranking of World No. 89 was the highest grand prix tour computer ranking for a Canadian until Glenn Michibata reached World No. 79 in 1984. Anthony "Tony" Bardsley (born February 9, 1945, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) is a former top-ranking Canadian tennis player from Vancouver. He competed on the nascent professional tennis tours (Grand Prix tour and World Championship Tennis) as well as in Davis Cup for Canada. Early tennis Bardsley went to California to pursue tennis, attending Diablo Valley College in 1963 and 1964. Donald McCormick (born 12 April 1945) is a former Canadian No. 1 professional tennis player. McCormick was active on the tour during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1966 he won the Vancouver Island championships, and was runner-up in both the 1967 Pacific Western Indoors and in the 1968 Pacific Western Indoors at Eugene, Oregon. In 1969, McCormick was runner-up in tennis at the Canada Games to Robert Bédard, winning the Silver Medal. In 1972 he made the mixed doubles third round of the Wimbledon Championships with Patricia Cody. McCormick won the Dorval Open in Quebec in 1974. That same year he also won the Canadian Grand Prix tournament series, winning the championship match over Tony Bardsley. McCormick was ranked Canadian No. 1 for 1974.
