A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Murray on 6 October 1973 because of the death of Joe Lawson (). Lawson had represented the district since 1932, as a member of the Country Party until 1968 when he lost pre-selection. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. Bruce Jeffery
Bruce Leslie Jeffery (born 25 June 1944) is a former Australian politician. He was a National Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Oxley from 1984 to 1988, Port Macquarie from 1988 to 1991, and Oxley again from 1991 to 1999. Jeffery was born in Shepparton, Victoria, to parents Reginald and Mona. He attended local state schools and in 1961 the family moved to Finley in New South Wales. After graduating in 1961 he worked with the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group until 1965, when he took up farming. On 6 January 1968 he married Margaret, with whom he had four children. He was secretary of the Rural Lands Protection Board in Jerilderie from 1972 to 1978 and at Kempsey from 1979 to 1984. He was also a Justice of the Peace, and had joined the Country Party in 1968. Jerilderie is a small, rural town in the southern Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Murrumbidgee Local Government Area. At th Jerilderie had a population of 922 people. It can be found along the Newell Highway south-west of Sydney and north of the Victorian state border. Jerilderie's postcode is 2716. Mary Meillon
Mary Meillon, née Lawson (4 October 1919 – 8 June 1980) was an Australian politician. She was the Liberal member for Murray in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1973 to 1980. Born Mary Lawson in Deniliquin, her father Joe Lawson was also a New South Wales politician. She attended Hornsby Girls High School before working as a stenographer. She married Francis Meillon on 5 September 1942, with whom she had one son and two daughters. When her father, the member for Murray in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, died in 1973, Meillon was selected as the Liberal Party's candidate for the by-election to replace him (Joe Lawson had been an ex- Country Party Independent). She narrowly defeated the Country Party's candidate, Bruce Jeffery, who later represented the Oxley and Port Macquarie electorates. Elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly were held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 17 November 1973. The result was a win for the Liberal- Country Party coalition under Sir Robert Askin, which had been in office since 1965. As of 2019, this was the last time the Coalition won a fourth-term in New South Wales.
