1971 Wimbledon Championships – Mixed Doubles
Ilie Năstase and Rosie Casals were the defending champions, but lost in the semifinals to Owen Davidson and Billie Jean King. Davidson and King defeated Marty Riessen and Margaret Court in the final, 3–6, 6–2, 15–13 to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 1971 Wimbledon Championships. Nirupama Mankad became the first Indian woman in the open era to play the main draw (and ultimately win a match) at a Grand Slam event. Owen Davidson
Owen Keir Davidson (born 4 October 1943) is a former professional tennis player of the 1960s and 1970s. Alongside Billie Jean King, Davidson won eight grand slam mixed doubles titles. In 1967 he won a calendar year slam for mixed doubles, when he won the Australian Championships (with Lesley Turner Bowrey), and the French Championships, Wimbledon and the US Championships (with King). Davidson became the first player to win a match in the open era of tennis when he defeated John Clifton in the first round of the British Hard Court Championships in Bournemouth played in April 1968. His best grand slam singles result was at Wimbledon in 1966, when he reached the semifinals (beating top seed Roy Emerson before losing to Manuel Santana). He is also the 1972 Australian Open and the 1973 US Open men's doubles champion, partnering John Newcombe and Ken Rosewall. John Alexander (Australian Politician)
John Gilbert Alexander (born 4 July 1951) is a former Australian politician and former professional tennis player. As a tennis player, Alexander reached a career-high singles rank of No. 8 in the world in 1975. He reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open singles on three occasions, and won the doubles in 1975 and 1982. He also played in the Australian team that won the 1977 Davis Cup. After the end of his playing career, Alexander worked as a tennis commentator and managed various sports-related businesses. Alexander won the Division of Bennelong for the Liberal Party at the 2010 election, and retained the seat in 2013 and 2016. He resigned on 11 November 2017 due to constitutional ineligibility arising from his dual citizenship of the United Kingdom. Gerald Battrick (27 May 1947 – 26 November 1998) was a Welsh tennis player who reached as high as No. 3 in Britain (and world No. 53), winning at least 6 titles. Personal life Gerald Battrick was born on 27 May 1947 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, where his father was the Medical Officer. Monica Giorgi
Monica Giorgi (born 3 January 1946) is an Italian former professional tennis player. Biography Born in Livorno, Giorgi twice reached the third round of the French Open during her career and played one Federation Cup tie for Italy, against Australia in the 1972 World Group quarter-finals. Giorgi was very politically active and wore an anti-apartheid shirt onto the court for the tie, which was held in South Africa, for which she was briefly banned by the Italian tennis federation. Giorgi was jailed in the early 1980s for her association with anarchist group Azione Rivoluzionaria. Authorities accused her of being involved in an attempted kidnapping, as well as attempted murder for those injured in the attempt, but she was acquitted of all these charges due to insufficient evidence.
